Firefighters Association apologizes after coals from its BBQ pit created fire hazard at local carwash ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - A local firefighter’s association apologized after a social media post went viral on July 5. The since-deleted post was made by the owner of Mr. Whip Wash Car Wash in Alexandria and explained they noticed something had burned a hole through one of their trash cans. The owner claimed this had been caused by hot coals and ash dumped from a barbeque pit into the trash. Upon checking security camera footage, the owner was shocked to see that the coals came from a barbeque pit that bore the name of the Alexandria Firefighters Association 540 (AFA). The post was quickly addressed by both Alexandria Fire Department (AFD) and AFA: AFD stated that none of their personnel or any active duty firefighters were involved in the incident. They said the barbeque pit was owned by AFA, and had been loaned out to a person not affiliated with either organization. They also expressed their concern for the danger this caused. Their full statement is provided below: In a post to their community page, AFA said they have addressed the issue and intend to cover any cost of damages: “It has been brought to our attention that there is a video being circulated around Facebook showing a BBQ pit being cleaned out by somebody who borrowed the pit over the weekend who is not affiliated with the Alexandria Fire Department. There were hot coals placed in a trash can. Alexandria Firefighters Association L540 has addressed the issue and it will not happen again. The Alexandria Firefighters Association takes full responsibility of the actions and has offered to cover any damages that may have occurred. This has nothing to do with the Alexandria Fire Department nor a direct reflection of the men and women who serve the citizens of Alexandria. If anybody has questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.” Both organizations stressed that the incident did not have anything to do with AFD. Mr. Whip Wash also released a statement on social media: In a message to KALB, the carwash owner said they support AFD and did not make the post to bash local fire fighters, rather they were looking for accountability and acknowledgement of the potentially dangerous situation this created at their business.
