The great writer Alice Walker wrote, “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” Lots of thoughts flooded my mind this past weekend: amidst flags waving, replications of the explosions over Fort McHenry that inspired the writing of the nation’s anthem, and the place of Black Americans in the story of America. I remember as a teen—coming of age—questioning the celebrations of liberty when my ancestors were still in chains. Do I denounce the hypocrisy or take the stance that enslavement was just a means to an end, I asked myself? I had the good fortune of being born and raised in Washington, DC, where recognition of Juneteenth long preceded its final acknowledgment as a national holiday. I wore a red, black, and green flag on my lapel, the colors of Black Liberation.
The innocence of my childhood allowed me to set aside politics, slavery, or anything that seemed ancillary to firing off my firecrackers or waving wrist-burning sparklers. Like most things we ignore as children, the curse of knowledge set in, and I was forced to face the realities of my place in the country’s history. Saturday was hot with rhetoric and sweltered with division. Ten days before the celebration, the Secretary of Transportation called people who have like-minded thoughts—such as me— “lib-tards.” Specifically referring to the myriad of musical acts that refused to celebrate President Trump rather than America Sec. Duffy said, “I think we have to give a big round of applause for our military band and singers, way better than those lib-tards that canceled on us. So much better. Thank you, guys. President Trump will make you famous.” Duffy said in a video The Daily Beast shared Wednesday, June 24.
Last night, after a long rain-and-lightning delay, the President decided that unity and the country’s birthday took second place to his personal grievances and politics, calling the recent resurgence of Democratic Socialism “communism.” First in the shadow of Mt. Rushmore and then in the dredge of the algae-invested Reflecting Pool, he repeated, “There is now a resurgence of the communist menace in our land, including from newcomers to our country who embrace ideas totally opposed to our way of life and our great success,” he said at the foot of Mt. Rushmore. “We’re not going to let this happen,” he concluded. Aside from not knowing the difference between communism and socialism, his attack was meant to renew the Red Scare of the 50s in the shadow of the Capitol. “Won’t happen, and all these talks from the communists, they haven’t got a chance, not even a chance. We don’t want communists in our country — never worked, and it never will work,” Trump said.
Mr. Trump relentlessly attacked his former opponent, Kamala Harris’s race, loyalty, and reverence for America. The GOP in their best snowflake meltdowns will rail against anyone who calls Mr. Trump corrupt or fascist. This is despite the Department of Justice’s obvious acquiescence to Mr. Trump and going after his perceived enemies, including Letitia James, James Comey, and John Brennan. The ignoring of court orders, the Emoluments Clause, his family’s entanglement with foreign interests for profit, and his making decisions that benefit his family’s financial interests are no better than Putin’s system of oligarchs in Russia. Pardon me if I take a break from a celebration manufactured by a president who would like to return people like me to a time when I had no rights, liberty, or pursuit of happiness. Despite it all, as my people have for hundreds of years, I refuse to quit. Paraphrasing Ms. Walker, I refuse to give up my power.
