Father Ted star exposes horror accident on set - ‘Health and safety wasn’t massive’ The actors really put themselves in danger. Actor Ardal O’Hanlon played Father Dougal McGuire in the Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted. The classic British-Irish sitcom was about three exiled Roman Catholic priests living on the remote Craggy Island. Since its debut in 1995, Father Ted quickly became a beloved British sitcom on Channel 4. Created by Irish writers Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews, the series ran until 1998 and catapulted stars Dermot Morgan and Ardal to stardom. Since then, Ardal has starred in the BBC series My Hero and Death in Paradise, the spin-off Return to Paradise and Derry Girls. Speaking about his Father Ted role, he told The Times: "I look back on that show very fondly. New people discover it all the time and repeat the catchphrases to me — I’m still offered quite a few cups of tea when I’m out and about. It was my first proper job in television and I pinch myself to think I was a part of TV history. "Health and safety wasn’t massive then and we often did our own stunts: myself and Father Ted — Dermot Morgan — once got dragged through a field after getting caught on the back of a tractor." Opening up about his current relationships with former co-stars from the hit comedy, the actor said: "I still get on great with everyone, though I haven’t seen much of the show’s creator Graham Linehan and am baffled as to why he got involved in the culture wars. "I feel sorry for him; he’s entitled to his opinions but the way he presented them made it confrontational." Last year, the programme came under fire after Channel 4 bosses slapped a trigger warning on some classic episodes on its streaming service. The 1998 instalment titled "Are You Right There, Father Ted" has sparked concerns that its content may potentially upset viewers, particularly due to its use of language and instances of racial impersonation. The warning states, "This episode was made in 1998 and contains language and racial impersonation which some viewers may find offensive."
