Fans had questions for Aunt Bee, but apparently not about her cooking Aunt Bee could whip up a feast, but apparently fans weren’t looking for her recipes! With an Emmy under her belt and a reputation as one of the longest-running cast members on The Andy Griffith Show, it’s no wonder Francis Bavier had no shortage of fans during her time as Aunt Bee. One of Aunt Bee’s most memorable traits was her mastery of good old-fashioned Southern comfort food. Her delicious meals (pickles aside) were the centerpiece of many memorable Andy Griffith Show episodes. It was a quality Bavier shared with her character. In an interview with the Sioux City Journal, Bavier revealed that she was also an accomplished cook. Watch The Andy Griffith Show on MeTV! Weeknights at 7 & 7:30, Sundays at 11 AM *available in most MeTV markets "Of course I can cook," Bavier said. "In fact, I’m a very good cook — oh, maybe not a gourmet cook, but I’m very good indeed in the kitchen." So, you might expect fans to have picked her brain for a few cooking tips. But Bavier revealed that her fan mail rarely included questions about her culinary skills. While it might seem unusual for fans to ask an actor about a character’s expertise, it wasn’t unheard of. Milburn Stone, best known for playing Doc Adams on Gunsmoke, received medical questions from fans seeking his doctorly advice. Of course, Stone was an actor, not a doctor. Bavier, on the other hand, actually knew her way around a kitchen. So why weren’t fans asking Aunt Bee for her recipes? Bavier had a theory. "After all, we don’t go in for exotic things on the show," Bavier explained. "Pork chops, chicken, roast beef, things like that. I think once we did something involving crab meat. But of course, I don’t really cook food for the show. The staff man tends to that." In other words, Aunt Bee may have been the queen of the Mayberry kitchen, but Bavier wasn’t actually the one cooking those famous meals on set. Still, fans loved Aunt Bee enough that she felt almost like a real person. And apparently, when they wrote to Bavier, they had plenty to say about Aunt Bee — just not much to ask about her recipes.
