Family survives horrific crash that left car wedged between tractor-trailers: ‘By the grace of God’ WASHINGTON COUNTY, Wis. (WISN) - A Wisconsin family of three survived a massive pileup that left their car wedged vertically between two tractor-trailers in what authorities describe as a miracle. Three members of Alex Thill’s family – his sister, Savannah Thill; her husband, Christian; and their 3-year-old daughter – have a long road to recovery ahead after a massive pileup on Interstate 41 in Washington County. The Aug. 17 crash involved four passenger cars and two tractor-trailers. The family’s car ended up wedged vertically between the two tractor-trailers, with authorities describing their survival as a miracle. “They survived something no family should ever have to go through,” Alex Thill said. “I couldn’t imagine losing my niece or my sister, let alone my brother-in-law.” The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says a 57-year-old motorcyclist died in an initial crash. Then, a tractor-trailer didn’t notice traffic had stalled and slammed into several vehicles. “In such a pure disarray that you couldn’t even consider that a car anymore, there’s no way,” Alex Thill said. Savannah Thill, her husband and their daughter were all rushed to the hospital, where they were put in the intensive care unit. Authorities say two other people were injured in the crash. Due to her injuries, Savannah Thill will not be able to walk for a year, her brother says. “The muscle in your knee that keeps it in natural motion snapped and recoiled up to her thigh,” Alex Thill said. Her husband suffered many broken bones and a crushed nose while their daughter had to be pulled out of her car seat amid the chaos and flown to the hospital. “She does have a bit of trouble walking, as her knee was messed up; it’s swollen. She has stitches and a pretty bad concussion,” said Alex Thill of his niece. While the family still has a long road to recovery, Alex Thill is grateful they made it out alive. “There’s no way that someone, especially a 3-year-old, could survive a significant crash like that, but thankfully, by the grace of God and with the paramedics’ help, they 100% did,” he said. A GoFundMe has been set up to help support the family as they recover. The sheriff’s office says the driver of the tractor-trailer that caused the crash has not been ticketed, but the incident is still under investigation. Copyright 2026 WISN via CNN Newsource.
