Кинотеатр бесплатно показал фильм с глухим актером, чтобы порадовать сестру-глухонемую

I recently preached a sermon on how small things make a big difference, and immediately after the service I heard this story from Shirley Schmidt that I thought I would share with readers. This is told in Shirley’s words: When Pastor Hans preached on how small things make a big difference, my mind went back to something that was done for me and my sister when I was a child. ADVERTISEMENT It was a summer about 74 years ago. My sister, Margaret (Margie), lived with us during the summer. During the winter, she went to the school for the deaf in Faribault, Minnesota. Imagine living with no television and looking forward to going to a movie on special occasions. We would get a flyer in the mail telling of the movies showing at the Marlow Theatre in Pine River. We would hang it on a nail by the shelf in the pantry. Margie and I were consulting the flyer one day, and she saw the title, “The Man of a Thousand Faces.” Margie told me that she believed the movie was for me — not for her. A day later, my mother got a phone call from John Rohr, the owner of the theater. He told us that Margie and I could go to that movie for free! Of course, we went! I was wondering why he chose us to attend that movie. When we got to the theater, John Rohr was there making sure we were not charged. I soon found out why we were invited to that movie. It was the story of Lon Chaney. He would make himself up to look like the extras needed on the movie set to get a start in the silent movie business. He later starred as “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” as well as in many other movies. Read more 'Faith' Columns Margie was usually quiet in the theater, but she cried out in surprise when Lon Chaney used sign language to communicate with his deaf parents. With excitement, she was telling me what they said. ADVERTISEMENT A movie cost a quarter for children back then. It may seem like a small gesture, but John Rohr took the time to make sure my sister saw that movie. This small gesture looms large in my memory. I will always remember his kindness. Shirley E.
