Бывшая модель потратила 50 тысяч долларов на операции и боролась с анорексией 20 лет ради красоты

Ex-Model, 36, Spent $50K on Surgery and Fought Anorexia for 20 Years to Be 'Pretty Enough' A former model opens up about the financial and personal toll of pursuing beauty ideals A former fashion model has told users on Reddit that chasing beauty standards cost her at least $50,000 (£37,000) in surgery and 20 years of anorexia, and that it was not worth it. The woman, who gives her age as 36, said she worked commercial and runway jobs through her 20s. Most of the work was commercial, she added, with runway only once or twice. She had her first operation a month after turning 18. She has lived with anorexia for two decades. Her post gathered hundreds of upvotes and dozens of replies. Cosmetic surgery is common in Britain. Surgeons carried out 26,840 procedures in 2025, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, drawing on returns from 237 members. Breast enlargement stayed the single most common operation, with 4,761 performed, and women made up almost 94% of the total. The NHS does not fund cosmetic breast surgery, so patients pay privately. A breast augmentation in the UK typically starts at around £4,500 ($6,140) and can pass £8,000 ($10,900), while a nose reshaping runs from roughly £7,000 ($9,550) to £13,000 ($17,700), UK clinic price guides indicate. Many clinics spread the cost over finance plans, with monthly payments from about £69 ($94) to £120 ($164) over five years. The Price of Looking the Part The woman said modelling paid decently, but that the work was damaging, telling readers the job meant destroying her health and being taken advantage of. On the common belief that good looks open doors, she pushed back. 'We do not get more opportunity for free,' she wrote, arguing that any advantage came with exploitation. She dismissed the idea of a beauty premium as something invented by the industry to sell more products. The eating disorder she described has an economic cost of its own. In the United States, eating disorders were estimated to cost $64.7B (£47.4B) a year, or about $11,808 (£8,700) for each person affected. The figure comes from a 2021 study by Harvard's STRIPED programme, the Academy for Eating Disorders, and Deloitte Access Economics. Individuals and their families carried the largest share of that bill, and lost earnings, not treatment, was the highest single cost. At least 1.25 million people in the UK are affected at any one time, the charity Beat estimates. The Reaction From Readers Replies ran with her theme. One commenter argued that software now dictates what counts as attractive, and that everyone ends up looking the same. 'Everyone is hot, and nothing is erotic,' the user wrote, blaming AI photo editing. Another tried to steer the message toward self-acceptance, away from surgery and dieting. The association's own figures show a shift. Breast implant removals rose 6% in 2025, it said, while breast augmentations fell 8%. Facelifts climbed 11%, and brow lifts 27%, while nose jobs fell 18%, its steepest drop on record. BAAPS has also warned about the cost of cheaper surgery abroad. It says the number of people needing corrective NHS treatment after procedures overseas rose 94% over three years, at an average cost of about £15,000 ($20,500) per patient. None of this can be pinned to the woman herself. No agency, employer, or surgeon is named in her post, and she does not identify herself, so the account cannot be matched to any contract or medical record. She did not say how much she earned, how many operations she had, or whether she still models. Her post closed with a warning to younger women weighing the same choices. 'A man is not worth your happiness,' she wrote. © Copyright IBTimes 2026. All rights reserved.
