eThekwini plumbers dispute resolved, recruitment begins Updated | By Tsakane Mhlongo More than 300 plumbers have already been recruited from an existing database of 1,886 workers. After months of engagements, a dispute between eThekwini Municipality and some of its former plumbers has been resolved. Pay rates remain unchanged The city has reached an agreement following a meeting between the workers' representatives and municipal officials, including Mayor Cyril Xaba. The plumbers raised concerns about their pay rates and how they would be recruited by the main contractors from the existing database. The municipality says all parties agreed that the hourly rates for the three categories of plumbers will remain unchanged. They also agreed that the 15 per cent management fee will no longer be deducted from plumbers' hourly rates. An agreement was also reached that the five main contractors will source plumbers from the existing pool of over 1,800 plumbers. The City says no plumber will be permitted to work on municipal infrastructure without the necessary accreditation. Recruitment for the first shift of plumbers has commenced, with over 300 plumbers already recruited from the database.
