Ellison retires as Grant County treasurer Published 6:00 pm Sunday, August 2, 2026 CANYON CITY — After 12 years of working for Grant County, Julie Ellison is retiring from her role as the county’s treasurer. The announcement came Wednesday, Sept. 2, during the meeting of the Grant County Court. Ellison informed the court of her intent to retire in a letter on Aug. 25. Ellison started working for the county in 2014 and became its treasurer in 2017. Her last day as treasurer is Oct. 1. Ellison said her retirement is not motivated by hard feelings or a dispute with the county; it is simply just her time to retire. “It’s time,” she said. Ellison said the one thing she’ll miss most of all is the job’s busyness. “I love most aspects of what I do,” she said. “There are a couple of things I don’t like, like the audit.” Ellison said in retirement she plans on devoting more time to her family. She won’t be too far away, however, and will lend her experience and expertise to the county’s new treasurer as they settle into the position. She expressed gratitude and thanked the community for its trust and faith in her during her tenure as county treasurer. “I appreciate their trust in me,” she said. “I was honored to serve the county and the citizens.” The county has begun searching for Ellison’s replacement. Grant County Judge Jim Hamsher said the court hopes to appoint a new treasurer at its Sept. 16 meeting. Hamsher and fellow Commissioners Mitch Wilson and John Rowell thanked Ellison for her service to the county at the meeting. “Julie, I’ll hate to see you go, but I know everybody has to retire at some point,” Hamsher said. “Thank you so much for all the years of service.”
