Elaine Paige makes candid retirement admission 'I can't do 8 shows a week any more' Musical theatre star Elaine Paige has shared an insight into her work commitments and admitted she no longer has the 'stamina' for certain jobs. Dame Elaine Paige has shared her thoughts on retiring and has hinted that it may not be likely. On Thursday (August 13) the 78-year-old appeared on ITV's This Morning to discuss the annual West End Woofs (and Meows) charity adoption event as well as her astonishing musical career. Elaine's musical theatre career spans an incredible 60 years. In addition to this, the star is also a radio host and has appeared on TV shows such as the BBC's Life and ITV's All Star Musicals. Given the fact that she had just released a studio album, This Morning presenters Rochelle Humes and Andi Peters wanted to find out whether she will soon retire. Elaine replied: "Well it's difficult isn't because I'm doing my radio show every week which I love, and I've just made this album so, it doesn't look like it. No." But regarding her musical theatre career, Elaine confessed that she may not be able to keep up with the demands of performing several shows a week. Andi asked:"Do you ever find time to relax?" Elaine replied:"Oh yes! That's probably why I'm not doing theatre anymore. I can't do eight shows a week anymore. I just don't have the stamina for it. "And also, my time in life, I want to be able to do the other things I didn't do, over all my years devoted to the theatre." In 2025, Elaine was honoured with a damehood by King Charles, recognising her extraordinary contribution to musical theatre. Her remarkable return to the spotlight continued in April this year, when she made a triumphant appearance to accept a special Olivier Award. The occasion also featured a tribute from Queen Camilla, who described Paige as “a truly defining figure in musical theatre". Now, the theatre star is embarking on another chapter with the release of her new album, Miscellaneous Paige. Rather than returning to the show tunes that have defined so much of her career, the record takes a more personal approach, featuring a collection of pop covers. Talking on This Morning, Elaine told the hosts that she chose to sing songs that she loved in her youth. This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1.
