Edgar J. Burde Edgar J. Burde Obituary Plattsburgh, NY - We find that the earth on which we live is a speck of matter revolving around a commonplace star, one of the billions in a galaxy of stars, which itself is only one of billions of galaxies. Even more chilling, we ourselves are the end result of a vast sequence of breedings and eatings, the same process that has also produced the clam and the cactus. — Steven Weinberg EJ died peacefully at home, which is what he wanted. His life began on a narrow peninsula on the outer edge of NYC, the Atlantic Ocean on one side — Jamaica Bay on the other. One of the sunny pleasures of youth was riding the breaking waves into the sand. The only problem was the sharp broken seashells that gathered where the waves thinned and stopped. Some years passed. After college he was drafted into the army during the Korean war. He considers himself lucky to have been sent to Germany, not Korea. His next great luck was deciding to enter graduate school in Berkeley, Calif., where in the luckiest day of his life he happened by the house of friends one Saturday morning and met a young woman who also happened to stop by. The young woman later became his wife. They moved from Berkeley to Montana and then to Washington State. After moving back to California for a time in the late 1960s he and his family, in 1970, moved across the country to north eastern New York. They soon found an old house on Lake Champlain where he and his wife lived together for over fifty years. From 1970 through to his retirement in December 1999, Edgar J. Burde taught in the English department at SUNY Plattsburgh where he was both admired and respected by faculty and students alike. Outside of his professional life Ed was devoted entirely to his family: his wife, Emily, who died Feb. 16, 2025, his three children, James, Mark and Dana, and his grandchildren, Wonare, Ekitu, Janan and Mayen.
