Worcester-based nanomedicine firm Eascra Biotech has expanded its footprint at Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives, moving into a space more than three times the size of its initial lab.
Fresh off winning a $7.98 million award from the NASA In Space Production Applications program, Eascra has moved into a 1,272-square-foot laboratory at MBI, the Worcester-based incubator announced Tuesday.
"Eascra Biotech's growth is exactly why we built the StartUp to ScaleUp model," MBI President and CEO Jon Weaver said in the Tuesday announcement. "Central Massachusetts is proving that innovative biotech companies don't have to leave the region to grow.”
Eascra now has seven employees at the lab, having expanded from its initial 366-square-foot lab it first occupied in early 2025.
Eascra is developing drug-delivery materials for RNA therapeutics, gene editing, and other treatments. The company is pursuing space-based manufacturing because microgravity may produce nanomaterials with greater stability and uniformity, potentially improving delivery of therapeutics to difficult-to-penetrate tissues such as cartilage and tumors.
Eascra has completed six International Space Station missions in the past three years and plans six more during the next two years. The company hired former AbbVie executive Andrew Goodearl as chief scientific officer in August, after graduating from MBI’s SPARK program in 2025.
MBI is the third-largest incubator in Central Massachusetts when measured by number of startups, with 42 participating firms as of the second quarter of 2026, according to information provided to the WBJ Research Department.
Founded in 1984, MBI announced in February a partnership with fellow Worcester-based startup hub Auxilium seeing the two organizations collaborate to invest $1 million in four medical device startups.
