Vinny was along for the whole PhD ride. So of course, he deserved to dress the part at commencement.
When Michelle Quien, PhD ’26, thought about walking across the stage in Killian Court at commencement, there was no question that her furry sidekick would be in attendance. And he would need to be properly attired.
“I always knew that I wanted my dog, Vinny, to have a doctoral gown for graduation,” says Quien. “He’s been with me throughout my entire PhD and has been a pivotal member of my research group, helping everyone by being cute and reducing their stress.”
When she couldn’t find a vendor of canine commencement garb online, she decided to make him a gown herself.
Quien’s doctoral research in Michael Strano’s lab focused on a novel material at the intersection of polymers and nanomaterials: 2DPA-1, which she says essentially combines the strength and conductivity of graphene with the bulletproof toughness of Kevlar. But she’s no stranger to working with materials at the macroscale. She crochets, knits, and embroiders clothing; took up pottery to produce her own mugs and dishes; and learned bookbinding to make journals and a physical copy of her thesis. So after watching a few tutorials, she used the sewing machines at the Metropolis makerspace to craft an outfit for Vinny, hand-sewing the finishing touches. Describing herself as “a bit of a perfectionist,” she confesses that she could have kept working on it. But, she says, “I know that Vinny looks cute regardless of what he wears.”
