Выжившие после преступлений Билла Хатчинсона получили компенсацию в 860 тысяч долларов

This month, we published a follow-up to one of D Magazine‘s most-read stories, “Dr. Death.” The 2016 article, written by Matt Goodman, gave Christopher Duntsch the moniker that would launch a true crime cottage industry. Matt—who listened to the Wondery podcast, but has not seen the Peacock show—understands why the story caught on, even after Duntsch’s ending was written. “It has something that I think everyone can be deeply afraid of,” he says. “That the person who you’ve allowed to cut inside your body is not competent, and nobody has been able to stop him. You have drugs. This booming Dallas scene in the early 2010s. You have a lot of patients with beautiful families and really rich stories that you can focus on to show the impact. It checks boxes in what I think is truly a unique way.” The story gave Duntsch the name by which he’ll always be known, but it also paved the way for reporting on his comfortable upbringing in Memphis or his fellow researchers at a Tennessee lab who claim Duntsch stole credit for their work. It painted a picture of the man he was before “he showed up in Dallas and started doing drugs and killing people.” “Nobody had pieced together where he came from, and so I started digging,” Matt says. If you were born in 2006, you’d be 20 years old right now, which doesn’t seem correct. But that also means there is a whole group of young adults who never saw Dateline: To Catch a Predator, where alleged pedophiles walk in to a nondescript tract house with a sixer of Zima only to encounter Chris Hansen and a bunch of printouts compiled by adults with the group Perverted Justice, who acted as decoys to catch men who believed they were chatting up underage children on the internet. The demise of the show came after a North Texas incident: Rockwall County assistant district attorney Bill Conradt was one of the men allegedly caught in a sting the show and Perverted Justice had in Murphy. Conradt did not travel to the bait house. He died by suicide as a local SWAT team and a Dateline crew surrounded his house in Terrell in November 2006. His sister would later sue, and that suit was settled in 2008. Final episodes of the show aired in 2007, and it was shelved in 2008. In 2009, Luke Dittrich would write “Tonight on Dateline This Man Will Die” for Esquire, which investigated the events leading up to Conradt’s death and the aftermath. That article was the jumping off point for a new A24 movie: Primetime, starring Robert Pattinson as Hansen. The movie will open on September 25, but the first trailer is out now. A group of Jeffrey Epstein survivors is taking out billboards all over the country to derail a bid to confirm Todd Blanche for Attorney General. That would include Dallas, where the group hopes to convince Sen. John Cornyn to vote against Blanche. The Dallas billboard is near U.S. 75 and the High Five. Courtesy photo The survivors oppose Blanche’s appointment for several reasons, including that, according to former AG Pam Bondi, Blanche has been in charge of the Epstein case. The Department of Justice has yet to release all the materials related to the case, and when it has released any files, it has also inadequately redacted information related to Epstein’s victims, while at the same time redacting the names of alleged abusers and others who are connected to Epstein, including Donald Trump. Blanche reportedly assisted the White House in crafting the public relations and political response to the Epstein case. The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold its first hearings on Blanche’s confirmation on July 15 and 16. According to Politico, Cornyn has not committed to voting Blanche out of committee, which would be the first step in confirming him as attorney general. A final floor vote in the Senate would happen before the August recess, should the Judiciary Committee vote to advance his nomination. A Dallas County jury last week awarded damages to two of three women accusing developer Bill Hutchinson of sexual assault. The jury deliberated for hours following a trial that lasted two weeks. The two women were awarded a combined $860,000. The women said that they were assaulted in the summer of 2020 at the Dallas Virgin Hotels and Dunkirk apartments, which Hutchinson was affiliated with. Hutchinson is also a registered sex offender who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl at his Laguna Beach vacation home. (The official charge was misdemeanor sexual battery.) “We are glad to see some vindication for our clients who bravely came forward against a rich and powerful man who clearly thinks the rules shouldn’t apply to him,” Michelle Simpson Tuegel, who represented the three women, said in a statement. “This was an extremely hard-fought case, but our efforts were well worth it to have a jury believe our clients and further validate Hutchinson’s record of sexually assaulting vulnerable women.” In 2021, we wrote about the accusations leveled at Hutchinson and the reactions of those who knew him well. At the time, he had stepped down as CEO of Dunhill Partners. He’s now CEO again. You can read that story below. As developer and reality show star Bill Hutchinson faces accusations of sexually assaulting young women, he has lost control of his carefully crafted persona.
