Dr. Charles (Charlie) Michael Feldhake Obituary
Beaver - Dr. Charles (Charlie) Michael Feldhake, 75, of Beaver, WV, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
He was born on July 14, 1951, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to the late Betty Cady Feldhake and Charles Joseph Feldhake.
Charlie earned his Bachelor's degree in physics from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1974, his Master's degree in soil science from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO in 1979, and his Ph.D. in environmental biophysics from CSU in 1981.
He began his professional career in 1981 as a research scientist for the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Beaver, focusing on agroforestry and forage ecology, and retired in 2012.
He served as a member of the Board of Directors for The Association for Temperate Agroforestry (AFTA) from 2007 to 2012, and as an Associate Editor for the scientific journal Agroforestry Systems from 2008 to 2011.
Charlie can be remembered as a runner; a basketball, volleyball, baseball, and ice hockey player; a bicyclist; a dance gypsy; and a hiker. He climbed to the top of Long's Peak, Colorado (elev. 14,256 feet) three times. He was a turtle enthusiast, keeping turtles as pets and collecting turtle figurines. Charlie was an avid reader of mysteries, novels, and non-fiction.
When he took his job, Charlie made a conscious decision not to let his work with the federal government become his life. As a result, many of his greatest accomplishments came outside the realm of his professional career. He served six years on the board of directors of the WV Environmental Council and occasionally lobbied the WV State Legislature for ten years. He was appointed by Governor Gaston Caperton to the Public Energy Authority. He served five years on the board of directors of The Place, a center serving families of teens at risk with behavioral problems, including three years as board president. He served three years on the board of directors of the Beckley Child Care Center, a home for teens at risk; three years on the Little Beaver State Park Foundation Board; and two years on the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Theater Arts Center board of directors. For eleven years, Charlie wrote a monthly column for The Register-Herald, Beckley's newspaper, on environmental and other local issues.
Charlie initiated the movement to convert an abandoned rail line into what became the Beckley Rail Trail and served on an advisory board during its construction. He also initiated movements that successfully blocked the placement of a large nuclear waste storage facility in southern West Virginia, and a large landfill for out-of-state waste — the site of which is now home to the Summit Bechtel Reserve.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Robin; his son, Luke; his daughter, Rachel; his sisters, Mary Beth Ryan and Cathy Meyer (Denny), both of Cincinnati; his brothers, Gerry Feldhake of Dallas and Dave Feldhake of Cincinnati; and several nieces.
At his request, his body will be cremated. A memorial gathering is being planned for a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy (www.wvhighlands.org) or the Piney Creek Watershed Association (www.pineycreekwatershed.org).
