SPARTA, N.C. (WBTV) - A downtown in North Carolina caught fire and damaged multiple businesses one night this week. The massive blaze broke out around 10:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, along Main Street in downtown Sparta in Alleghany County. The Alleghany County Rescue Squad posted a video Tuesday morning, which showed a long brick building engulfed in flames with a huge cloud of smoke and fiery embers rising into the sky. The building housed several small businesses, right across the street from the Alleghany County Courthouse. A post from that department indicated firefighters were downtown for several hours. Some of the small businesses were damaged by the fire. A Keller Williams realty office appeared to have sustained the most significant damage. A post from the office said its part of the downtown building was “destroyed.” A coffee shop a couple doors down from the realty office -- Becca’s Backwoods Bean -- said it sustained smoke and water damage. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show at least some damage to other businesses in the building. It was not immediately clear if anyone was hurt, nor what caused the fire. Sparta is about a 10-minute drive from the Virginia state line, right where highways 18 and 21 meet in Western North Carolina.
