Doña Ana County offers free mosquito-eating gambusia fish to residents to curb larvae DONA ANA COUNTY, N.M. (KFOX14/CBS4) — Doña Ana County is offering residents a new way to fight mosquitoes, free mosquito-eating fish. County leaders announced that the county’s Vector Control sector will give away groups of gambusia fish, also known as mosquito fish, which eat mosquito larvae. The county says residents can place the fish in areas with still water, including ponds and animal troughs, to help prevent mosquito breeding. “You put these fish in the pond, and they keep that population of the larvae down,” said Orlando Casas, Dona Ana County Vector Control supervisor. “They eat, and the females consume up to three times their weight." He added, "The public loves these fish. They put them in their ponds. You know, some people have ponds in their backyard with no moving water, which, if the pond isn't moving, is great for breeding mosquitoes. The mosquitoes will go lay their eggs there, and then we have larvae." The county is giving away about two to six fish per person every Tuesday from 8-10 a.m. and will continue distributing them through the end of this month. Residents can pick up the fish at 4605 West Pichaco Avenue in Las Cruces. The county asks people to bring a bucket for transport. To protect against mosquito bites and reduce the spread of disease, Vector Control recommends four D's: DEET: Use insect repellents that contain DEET when outdoors. DRESS: Wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks when outdoors. DUSK & DAWN: Take extra care during peak mosquito biting hours, from dusk to dawn, or consider avoiding outdoor activities during those times. DRAIN: Drain standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes, and birdbaths. After rains or lawn watering, residents should tip and toss standing water in outdoor spaces.
