В D&D возвращается легендарный механический соловей королевы Элиссы из книги Arcana Unleashed

In the Dungeons & Dragons world of Greyhawk, Queen Ehlissa’s Marvelous Nightingale is a mechanical songbird capable of controlling minds, compelling creatures to tell the truth, and wreaking fiery havoc upon anything it targets. Despite its cute appearance, the Marvelous Nightingale actually has a sinister legend surrounding it. And for the first time in nearly 26 years, the upcoming book Arcana Unleashed will reintroduce it to D&D as one of the most powerful artifacts that adventuring parties can wield. During a recent press preview attended by Polygon, D&D designer Amanda Hamon said Wizards of the Coast has been digging into the canon of older settings, particularly Greyhawk and the Forgotten Realms, for characters and objects that haven’t appeared in years. “Queen Ehlissa does not have a huge, prominent space in the canon previously,” Hamon said. The artifact nevertheless “captured the imaginations” of several people at Wizards, particularly Patrick Renie, who designed the magic items section of Arcana Unleashed. Hamon said that Renie wanted to explore how the Nightingale could function under D&D’s revised rules. She referred to it as both “a great nod to the past” and an opportunity to see how a classic artifact operates in the current version of the game. The new Queen Ehlissa’s Marvelous Nightingale is a mechanical bird covered in golden feathers, with crystal eyes and a small wind-up key on its back. Its owner can magically bring it to life for 10 minutes, during which its song can be heard from up to 300 feet away. While the song is active, a 15-foot Aura of Truth functions like the Zone of Truth spell, compelling those within its range to pass a saving throw or lose the ability to lie. The bird’s owner can also spend its six rechargeable charges to cast from a limited list of powerful spells as a bonus action. Spells include Calm Emotions, Slow, Compulsion, Greater Restoration, Prismatic Spray, and Delayed Blast Fireball. It can also cast Detect Evil and Good and Speak with Animals without using any charges, along with Counterspell once per day. Functionally that means the Nightingale can easily locate and debuff nearby enemies, and render them unable to attack your party. In the midst of combat, however, Prismatic Spray and Delayed Blast Fireball provide some huge offensive firepower while Counterspell shuts down enemy spellcasters. Greater Restoration can undo a variety of debilitating effects. As if all that weren’t enough, it comes with two minor beneficial properties and one major beneficial property that are randomly selected (which is typical for artifact-tier magic items). It also carries one minor detrimental property, but that’s a far cry from the previous dangers traditionally associated with this artifact. The Nightingale first appeared in 1976’s Eldritch Wizardry, the third supplement published for the original D&D, written by Gary Gygax and Brian Blume. But even after five decades, D&D has never provided an entirely reliable account of where it came from — or what it truly contains. The version of the story presented in 1993’s Book of Artifacts portrays Queen Ehlissa as the last in a line of beloved, benevolent rulers of the United Kingdom of Ahlissa. The queen had no family but kept songbirds as pets, including a favorite flesh-and-blood nightingale that was like a surrogate child to her. When the bird died on Ehlissa’s birthday, she was devastated. Her subjects gathered the kingdom’s greatest artisans, bards, mages, and craftspeople to build the mechanical recreation, a feat which took an entire year. In other accounts, she forced her people to do this. Arcana Unleashed presents the touching version of the story as a mere legend (keep in mind that the book is written from the perspective of Laeral Silverhand, the open lord of Waterdeep), so in theory a Dungeon Master could spin this however they see fit. Other Greyhawk accounts are much more sinister. Mordenkainen, one of D&D’s most famous archmages, reportedly believed that much of the magic used to construct the Nightingale came from the mysterious wizard Xagy and Joramy, Greyhawk’s goddess of fire, volcanoes, wrath, etc. Those accounts suggest the bird was actually a prison containing some unidentified supernatural force. Ehlissa somehow prevented that force from escaping throughout the many centuries of her reign. In most iterations, the bird sits in a mesh cage so it cannot break free, whereas the new description does not mention a cage at all. Another older version of the artifact included an increasing chance that the power within it might break free whenever the Nightingale was used. It would destroy its owner’s soul and take control of their body before murdering the unfortunate adventurer’s companions. The version published in Book of Artifacts is also astonishingly nasty. Anyone possessing the Nightingale gradually became more and more childlike. Monsters sent its owner fleeing in terror, and each night there was a 50% chance that its owner would be too frightened to sleep. If that happened three nights in a row, it would result in a permanent stat reduction. The owner was also forced to tell the complete truth and lost an entire experience level for every month they kept the bird. The new version drops virtually all the more flavorful curses previously associated with the bird, although the Zone of Truth effect preserves the artifact’s long-standing association with forced honesty. It also replaces the older suggested methods for destroying it, which included giving it to the mythical king of songbirds or having it smashed by a tinker gnome with the strength of a titan. In Arcana Unleashed, only one method will do: The Nightingale must be released into a whirlwind in Limbo. That at least implies something otherworldly is at play here. Whether Queen Ehlissa’s Marvelous Nightingale is a loving memorial, an instrument of magical tyranny, or an ornate cage built around a body-snatching horror remains unresolved. After 26 years, D&D players can finally wind it up again and find out for themselves. Arcana Unleashed will be released on September 15, 2026.
