Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District hosts multi-sensory reading training for teachers
KINGSFORD, Mich. (WLUC) - Early elementary teachers from within the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District gathered in Iron Mountain for a weeklong training program.
The Institute for Multi-Sensory Education travels the country training teachers on effective literacy approaches and techniques for kindergarten through second grade students.
These teachers are learning the Orton-Gillingham methodology, a science of reading-backed, direct, multi-sensory teaching strategy with systematic, sequential lessons focused on phonics.
“So, we are focused on a multi-sensory approach, making sure all the language pathways are being accessed during instructions,” said Hannah Ytkin is the instructor from IMSE. “So, language by eye, language by ear, language by mouth and language by hand happening simultaneously to help with student retention of those concepts and skills.”
Teachers worked in pairs practicing the teaching techniques with each other in preparation for the school year. The program’s goal is to improve literacy scores and create consistency in reading instruction nationally.
“There is currently public doc 146, which is our third-grade reading law and dyslexia law, and within that law we have to use structured literacy that follows the science of reading, and this provides that for our teachers,” said Angel Inglese, the general education director at the DIISD.
With multi-sensory learning, it takes a lot of practice to bring those skills back to the classroom, but the teachers enrolled in this program are ready to go.
“I hope to bring multi-ways to bring to the students, not just one way. Each student learns differently and I’m excited to show each different way,” said Dawn Hazelwood, a Kindergarten Teacher at North Elementary in Iron Mountain.
“Yesterday afternoon they did their first lesson beginning to end, putting all those routines, all the small pieces together,” Ytkin commented. “It was really great. They sounded great. They sounded better than they thought they did for going through it the first time.”
IMSE OG+ training concluded Friday as teachers begin to prepare to go back to the classroom in the coming weeks.
