New Jersey's District Attorney's Office released the information Friday, Aug. 28. The counts include illegal receipt of explosive materials, illegal storage of explosive materials, and illegal possession of plastic explosives without a detection agent. On Wednesday, Aug. 26, Rizos stood before U.S. Magistrate Judge Leda Dunn Wettre in Newark federal court. She ordered him held. According to New Jersey News 12, federal agents nabbed Rizos in June. They'd been tracking what they called a "destructive device manufacturing operation" that spanned 2025 through 2026. On June 24, agents swept through his house and found 109 separate explosives — each one "capable of massive destruction," according to investigators. The sweep turned up a makeshift lab scattered across his bedroom, basement, and garage. Agents seized firearms. They grabbed ammunition. They confiscated detailed instructions for assembling different kinds of explosives, plus an array of industrial and pharmaceutical chemicals that could cook up explosive devices. Court filings and statements show Rizos bought and obtained various explosive materials from online sellers between April 2020 and June 2026. He ordered fuels, fuses, precursor chemicals, and lab gear that ended up stockpiled at his residence. The find forced authorities to clear out nearby houses. Agents pulled multiple containers of suspected explosives from the bedroom alone. Two of the charges — illegal receipt of explosive materials and illegal possession of plastic explosives without a detection agent — each threaten up to 10 years behind bars and a $250,000 fine. The illegal storage count brings a maximum sentence of one year in prison plus a $100,000 fine. U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer's office is prosecuting the case. J.
