Рабочий, отказанный в ипотеке из-за расы, создал 400 живых скульптур из растений

Denied a house because of his race, he answered with 400 living sculptures No pesticides, no fertilizer, no horticulture degree—just a factory worker with a ladder and a vision Pearl was born to humble circumstances, the son of sharecroppers in the south—in a time of segregation. His early life was one with few luxuries and many obstacles. But that didn't stop him from pursuing his unusual dream. After completing high school, he served in the military and went on to work grueling shifts in a low-paying factory job for 30 years. He never let pervasive racism or his financial inequities slow him down. He fulfilled his role as provider. But there was a formative event that changed his entire trajectory. He wanted to buy a home in the Bishopville city limits in an all white neighborhood, but was blocked because residents thought a black person wouldn't maintain their lawn. And so he set about showing residents how wrong they actually were. The path to his incredible hobby After being denied, he settled on building a house just outside of the city limits. Then— he proceeded to take up gardening. Though the hobby was initially born out of a resentment towards his prior house searche, he quickly learned he loved it. Pearl kept going back to his garden, looking for ways to improve his craft. Over time, this chore became a form of expression and artistry. On a whim, he set a goal to win his small town of Bishopville's "Yard of the Month" award. He took a single hedging lesson and worked harder to refine his skills. After cramming his work in to prepare, he won the contest. He later became first black recipient of Bishopville, South Carolina's Garden of the Year Award. But he didn't stop there. He set about to not only maintain his yard, but make it into something nobody would soon replicate. His hobby turned him into a local legend, often seen standing on ladders with lawn equipment, chipping away at his hedges. And what's incredible is that outside of that one gardening lesson, he had no horticulture training or guidance. He also had no head start on any of these hedges. He rescued discarded plants such as junipers, hollies, Leyland cypresses, and more—and helped morph them into living sculptures. This was grueling work to maintain, and he continued doing it well into his 70s. Pearl also worked against normal rules, foregoing pesticides and fertilizer. He rarely watered plants, allowing them to grow naturally. His story later inspired the acclaimed 2006 documentary, A Man Named Pearl. Pearl Gardens remain a fixture of his town, where people visit to walk the grounds in awe of his artistry without having to spend any money. The three acre gardens currently host more than 400 plants and his theme is "Love , Peace, and Goodwill." People often get engaged on this premises. Where things stand today Pearl Fryar just passed away this past April but his gardens are being maintained by the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden, Inc—a non-profit built to preserve his horticultural legacy. Through it, a very talented topiary artist, Mike Gibson, is currently maintaining the property and taking the project even further, with a children's garden launching soon. I was able to visit the garden five years ago during a road trip and can say with confidence you'll be in awe of the plants and their structure. My girlfriend was resistant to going because it was slightly out of the way on our drive. But after we arrived, she too was impressed and so glad we went. The one very small downside is that, if you take pride in your garden, you might feel a bit outclassed when you get there—but it is still well worth it. The thing I learned In Pearl, I realized there is something quite compelling about a person showing a passion for a craft—just for the sake of doing it and because it brings them satisfaction. There is no agenda or profit motive, only natural interest. Pearl saw the plants as a tool for his artistry, and a means of expressing himself and sharing his creativity with people. Which is why I've always encouraged people to pursue anything they find interesting—even if others find it dull. Focus on what makes it interesting to you and begin learning and practicing. What can easily happen is that, as your interest and skills grow, that strange hobby may take you to places you'd never imagined. You may broaden other people's horizons along the way. Pearl, you have left an incredible legacy. Rest in peace.
