The third Leguan 2HU bridge-laying system has arrived at the 1st “Klapka György” Armored Brigade. With this delivery, the Hungarian Defense Forces’ fleet of bridge layers for the Leopard 2 tank family is now complete, the 1st Armored Brigade announced on its social media page.
The heavy tracked vehicles bolster the operational capabilities of the “11th vitéz Tarczay Ervin” Tank Battalion based in Tata, northwestern Hungary, and indirectly enhance the firepower and logistical flexibility of the entire Hungarian army.
As the manufacturer KNDS explains on its website, the Leguan is “a modular, versatile and extremely high-performance overall concept for the rapid and reliable bridging of infrastructures which hinder movement.”
This technically sophisticated system, which is in widespread use worldwide, goes far beyond the function of a simple bridge layer.
It is characterized by maximum performance, extremely simple operation, and the highest level of protection for the crew. The overall system is designed to be so flexible that it can be deployed on tracked or wheeled chassis, as well as in the form of a ferry or pontoon bridge.
The variant for Hungary – the Leguan Leopard 2 – is based on the chassis of the Leopard 2 main battle tank. This ensures that the engineer system has a level of mobility that can seamlessly keep pace with the Hungarian main battle tanks over rough terrain, while also guaranteeing the highest degree of logistical and maintenance compatibility.
Key product features:
In addition to a modern and high-performance protection concept for the crew, the system is equipped with numerous additional features, including an integrated cooling system, an auxiliary power unit (APU), and an all-round vision system for uninterrupted performance and endurance in the field.
A technological highlight is the modern, integrated measurement system. This ensures the safe and automatic detection of the bridge’s already utilized crossing capacity. This allows the remaining bridge load capacity to be calculated precisely – a crucial safety factor in high-intensity combat.
With its introduction in Hungary, the system is cementing its status as a global standard. To date, the armed forces of 19 nations rely on the Leguan – whether in wheeled, tracked, or mixed configurations.
Nine nations, including Hungary, now rely specifically on the Leguan Leopard 2 variant.
This broad user base offers strategic advantages. Since 2023, the so-called ‘Leo User Club’ has made it possible to plan and develop collective logistics concepts, technological advancements, and modification projects in close collaboration with the Leopard 2 user community. The Leguan’s modular design thus makes it tactically valuable and the ideal platform for teaming, pooling, and sharing within the framework of international and alliance-wide cooperation.
