Альянс Debswana и CEDA запускает программу поддержки местных предприятий для диверсификации экономики Ботсваны

A new alliance between the titan of Botswana’s diamond industry, Debswana, and the Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA) signals a deliberate shift toward empowering citizen-owned businesses and weaving a more resilient, diversified economic fabric. This partnership aims to transform the country’s industrial landscape by unlocking opportunities that extend well beyond the mines, into agriculture, manufacturing, innovation, and engineering. For more than five decades, Debswana has been synonymous with Botswana’s economic success, its diamonds a cornerstone of national wealth. But Andrew Motsumi, Debswana’s CEO, acknowledges the need for evolution. His vision reaches past the company’s storied legacy, seeking sustainable growth avenues that can outlast the finite nature of mining. By leveraging Debswana’s extensive operational expertise, market access, and established supply networks, the company plans to incubate commercial opportunities that can help scale local businesses and integrate them meaningfully into industrial value chains. At the heart of this partnership is CEDA, an agency with a mandate to empower citizen entrepreneurs through financing and enterprise development. Khalala Mokefane, CEDA’s caretaker CEO, articulates a clear intent: to build enterprises that endure beyond the mining boom and to strengthen local supply chains so more value stays within Botswana’s borders. Mokefane’s emphasis on practical development over policy rhetoric underscores a critical challenge for Botswana – transforming good intentions into tangible results by nurturing capable suppliers and industrial partners. Botswana’s journey toward economic diversification is not new, but it is gaining fresh momentum. The country’s reliance on diamond mining has long been both a blessing and a vulnerability. While the sector has propelled Botswana from one of the poorest countries in the world to middle-income status, experts warn that an overdependence on mining poses risks to long-term economic stability. This partnership could be a turning point, aiming to catalyze a shift toward a private-sector-led economy that puts citizen-owned businesses front and center. Mining in Botswana is evolving. The sector itself is expanding beyond diamonds to include base metals and critical minerals essential for global energy transitions. This diversification within mining presents new opportunities for local industries to develop robust value chains. Strategic investments in infrastructure; power, transport, and industrial parks co-located with mines; are vital to reducing costs and enabling industrial clustering, which in turn can foster innovation and competitiveness among local businesses. Botswana’s government has recognized the imperative to strengthen local supply chains, particularly in mining. There is a concerted push to attract manufacturing and service industries linked to mining activities, a move designed to keep more economic value within the country. This approach aligns closely with the goals of the Debswana-CEDA partnership, which seeks not just to support small businesses but to embed them in sustainable supply networks that underpin the nation’s broader economic ambitions. The private sector’s role in Botswana’s development is gaining prominence. CEDA’s financing capabilities are crucial in this regard, providing citizen entrepreneurs with the capital and support necessary to grow. Yet, the challenge remains to ensure that these enterprises are competitive and capable of meeting the rigorous demands of industrial supply chains. Mokefane’s insistence on “building in practice” is a call to arms for all stakeholders to move beyond talk and deliver measurable outcomes that will strengthen Botswana’s industrial base. Debswana’s legacy and market access give it a unique position to act as a catalyst for change. By identifying commercial opportunities and mentoring small businesses, it can help scale enterprises that feed into its supply chain, creating a multiplier effect on economic growth. This approach not only supports citizen participation but also contributes to building a more resilient economy less vulnerable to external shocks. The partnership’s focus on sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, innovation, and engineering reflects Botswana’s broader economic diversification strategy. Agriculture remains a significant employer and has untapped potential for industrialization through agro-processing. Manufacturing and engineering are seen as critical growth areas that can absorb labor and add value to raw materials produced within the country. Innovation, particularly in technology and engineering, is another pillar where Botswana aims to build competitive advantage. By fostering an ecosystem where citizen entrepreneurs can leverage Debswana’s industry experience and CEDA’s development support, the partnership hopes to nurture new ventures that are both scalable and sustainable. This fusion of expertise and financial backing could unlock novel industrial opportunities that have eluded Botswana’s economy for years. This collaboration also aligns with Botswana’s national vision for 2036, which prioritizes economic diversification and private-sector-led growth. The government has outlined ambitious plans to reduce dependence on mining revenues and accelerate development in other sectors. By strengthening linkages between a major player like Debswana and local enterprises through CEDA, the partnership is a practical step toward realizing these goals. The Debswana-CEDA partnership is more than a corporate alliance; it is a microcosm of Botswana’s future. It embodies a new economic chapter where citizen-led businesses are empowered to build industries that can endure beyond the lifespan of diamond mines. The success of this initiative could well determine whether Botswana can sustain its hard-won prosperity and emerge as a diversified economic powerhouse in Southern Africa. The stakes are high, and the world will be watching as two giants of Botswana’s economy join forces to turn potential into progress.
