Работники аптек CVS в трех штатах одобрили санкции на забастовку из-за опасного дефицита персонала

CVS Pharmacists in Three States Cite Unsafe Staffing as They Clear the First Step Toward a Strike Unionized CVS pharmacy workers in Rhode Island, California, and Arizona have voted to approve a strike sanction, citing staffing levels they describe as unsafe for patients and unsustainable for staff. The vote passed by wide margins: 90.3 percent in Rhode Island, where CVS is headquartered, 96.7 percent in California, and 100 percent in Arizona. The Boston Globe reported that workers at eight locations were involved, including four in Rhode Island, while at least one trade outlet put the number at six stores. No walkout is scheduled. A strike sanction is the first of two approvals required before employees can leave their posts, which means this is a step in a negotiation rather than an announced work stoppage. Customers at affected stores should expect service to continue. A Strike Sanction Is the First of Two Steps The workers organized about two years ago with The Pharmacy Guild, an initiative of the labor group IAM Healthcare, and have been seeking a first contract since. Their stated demands center on staffing rather than pay: stronger staffing levels, what they describe as a realistic workload, adequate time to review each prescription, and the formation of a professional practice committee that would give pharmacy staff input into pharmacy operating decisions. "Safe staffing, support and the respect we need," is how pharmacy technician Gabriella Hauser described what workers are seeking, in comments to WJAR after a lunchtime walkout at a Wakefield, Rhode Island store. CVS has said there will be no interruption of pharmacy service at the affected stores if members ultimately approve a work stoppage, and that the organized employees represent a small fraction of its pharmacy workforce. The company also says it has bargained in good faith with some units but has not begun discussions with three others because of pending National Labor Relations Board proceedings, according to KJZZ. Workload at the Counter, and What Each Side Says The patient safety argument rests on a specific claim about time. The union alleges that pharmacists are sometimes expected to spend less than a minute reviewing each prescription that passes through the company's system. CVS spokesperson Amy Thibault said those claims are false. The disagreement matters because the pharmacist's verification step is where dispensing errors are supposed to be caught. That review includes confirming the right drug and strength, checking for interactions with a patient's other medications, screening for allergies and duplicate therapy, and confirming the dose is appropriate for the patient. Workers say the difficulty is not the review itself but everything competing with it. Pharmacists describe absorbing vaccinations, insurance problems, patient questions, physician phone calls, and technician supervision alongside dispensing, with interruptions arriving continuously. One unionized pharmacist in Wakefield told the Globe that responsibilities keep getting added, pointing to vaccine administration volumes and a growing load of GLP-1 prescriptions. CVS says it tailors pharmacist and technician staffing to each individual store, has acknowledged staffing strain in the years after the pandemic, and points to steps it has taken, including additional support scheduling, strengthened recruitment and hiring, enhanced training, and new workload-sharing and pharmacy phone-system tools. Neither position has been independently verified at these stores. What is documented is that the two sides describe the same workplaces very differently, and that a first contract remains unsigned after two years. Record Revenue Forms the Backdrop The dispute is unfolding during a period of strong company financial performance. In the second quarter of 2026, CVS Health reported total revenues of $106.1 billion, up 7.3 percent year over year, and net income of $2.98 billion, roughly triple the $1.02 billion it posted in the same quarter a year earlier. The company raised its full-year guidance. Those figures do not establish that any particular store is understaffed. Corporate revenue and store-level scheduling are different decisions made at different levels of an organization. They explain why the contrast features prominently in the way the union frames the dispute, and readers should understand it as framing rather than as evidence of staffing adequacy. Pharmacy labor actions have appeared at multiple chains in recent years, generally centering on the same set of issues, as Healthcare Dive noted. This one is notable mainly because it is occurring in the company's home state. Prescription Habits Worth Keeping Regardless None of this requires patients to change pharmacies, and there is no indication of a service interruption. What it does offer is a reason to revisit habits that are useful under any staffing conditions. Check the label before leaving the counter. Confirm the medication name, the strength, the directions, and your own name. Errors are uncommon, but they are far easier to catch at the pickup window than at home. Keep one current list of everything you take, including over-the-counter products and supplements, and give it to the pharmacy. Interaction screening depends on the pharmacy having a complete picture, which it will not have if prescriptions are split across multiple chains. Ask questions when something looks different. A change in pill appearance often reflects a switch in generic manufacturer, which is routine, but it is worth confirming rather than assuming. Refill a few days before running out rather than on the last dose, particularly for medications where a gap carries real consequences, including insulin, anticoagulants, seizure medications, cardiac drugs, and psychiatric prescriptions. That margin protects against any disruption, whether in staffing, supply, or due to a backlog. Anyone who believes they received the wrong medication should contact the pharmacy immediately and should not take the dose. Patients can also report suspected errors to their state board of pharmacy. Pharmacy staffing is also regulated unevenly. A minority of states set ratios or limits on pharmacist workload, while most leave staffing to employer discretion. That patchwork is part of why disputes of this kind end up in labor negotiations rather than before a regulator. Negotiations are continuing. A second vote would be required before any work stoppage could occur. Key Questions Answered Are CVS pharmacists on strike? No. Workers approved a strike sanction, the first of two approvals required before any walkout. No work stoppage has been scheduled. Which locations are involved? Eight stores in Rhode Island, California, and Arizona, including four in Rhode Island, according to the Boston Globe. One trade outlet reported six stores. What are workers asking for? Stronger staffing levels, a workload they describe as realistic, adequate prescription review time, and a professional practice committee with input into pharmacy decisions. What does CVS say? That staffing is tailored to each store, that it has added scheduling support, recruitment, training, and workflow tools, and that union claims about review times are false. Will my prescriptions be delayed? CVS says there will be no interruption of service even if a work stoppage is approved. What can patients do? Check the label before leaving the counter, keep one complete medication list at a single pharmacy, and refill several days before running out. What if I think I got the wrong medication? Do not take the dose. Contact the pharmacy immediately, and you may also report the incident to your state board of pharmacy. Published by Medicaldaily.com
