Latest update August 26th, 2026 11:47 AM Aug 24, 2026 News (Kaieteur News) – Pan Africanist, industrialist, author, scientist, entrepreneur and educator, William “Tom” Dalgety died on Saturday. The prominent Guyanese, who made significant multi-disciplinary contributions to Guyana’s cultural, scientific, and industrial landscapes was 86. He founded an industrial business on Bent Street Georgetown, known for manufacturing construction essentials like wood putty and “Aquatight” waterproofing sealant. He later expanded his entrepreneurial footprint into the food industry, acquiring agricultural leases to advance local agro-processing and employment. He also served as a science lecturer at the Government Technical Institute (GTI) in Guyana, mentoring students in chemistry and geology. Dalgety was also an active leader within Guyana’s Pan-African movement and a vocal supporter of the Rastafarian community, dedicating his life to teaching African heritage and identity. As an author, he documented regional history, publishing the book “Sugar and Rum 1640-1892 in Diaspora Africa,” which explores the historical, technological, and political impacts of the sugar industry on Guyana and the wider Caribbean. The People’s National Congress Reform on Sunday, expressed sorrow over Dalgety’s passing. “Tom was no doubt a competent engineer who did pioneering work on the production of alum and putty in Guyana. Most will remember his remarkable contribution to Pan Africanism and the raising of African cultural awareness among African Guyanese. In particular, he pioneered the popularisation of African songs and movies in Guyana. He was always recommending African Guyanese visit to the motherland, Africa,” the party said in a statement. It continued that “Tom” was a serious advocate for African Guyanese to own land and businesses and for there to be close relations between Africans in the motherland and the diaspora. “The PNCR wants to thank his family for sharing Tom with us. He was an inspiration and one who believed in the indomitable spirit of Africans. He will surely be missed and the vacuum his departure has created is exceedingly difficult to fill.
