Court documents detail alleged disruption at Oregon state senator event in Forest Grove FOREST GROVE, Ore. (KATU) — A man was arrested in Forest Grove after police said he disrupted a public event featuring State Senator Janeen Sollman and grabbed the senator’s glasses off her head before throwing them to the ground. According to court documents, on Aug. 8, a Forest Grove Police Department officer was dispatched around 10:13 a.m. to a call regarding an "unwanted person" at 1399 Southwest Fernhill Road in Forest Grove. Call notes said a man was allegedly disrupting a public event with a senator and that the man was known by Sen. Sollman. The initial caller said the man had taken the senator’s glasses off her head and thrown them to the ground, according to court documents. Police contacted 28-year-old Pedro Jahen Garcia Balderrama who allegedly identified himself as the suspect. Sollman told the officer that Pedro often attends her public events and causes a disturbance. She said that of all the people who attend her events, she is most afraid of Pedro and one other person. She told police that on Aug. 8, he was yelling profanities and causing a disturbance, and that people left because his behavior was “tumultuous and inappropriate for the event and public park environment.” She said that while he was yelling, he got within inches of her, took her glasses from her head and threw them into nearby bushes. The officer said a video was reviewed and witnesses were interviewed, and that witnesses described the same alleged aggressive behavior and physical actions. Based on the investigation, police said they arrested Garcia Balderrama for harassment and disorderly conduct in the first degree, according to court documents. Sollman later described the event as part of her regular community outreach. She said the man arrived “very agitated” and that she repeatedly asked him to allow others to speak before asking him to leave. “He stepped very closely into my face,” Sollman said. “I thought he was going he was going to take a a swing at me and and hit me, and I kind of moved...and he took my glasses and then threw them off in the bushes about 4 feet away.” Sollman said several people called police and that officers later arrested and booked the man “for harassment.” Asked what she believed the man was focused on, Sollman said, “He talked about was data centers, and immigration issues,” adding that she has encountered him at other public meetings, including Hillsboro City Council meetings. Sollman said she was not physically hurt, but added that the situation was “extremely difficult” and “scary for folks,” and that some attendees left or became emotional. She also said she was grateful for the response from Forest Grove police and said she appreciated outreach from other agencies and colleagues. “I've heard from just as many Republican colleagues as I have my own Democratic colleagues,” Sollman said, adding, “Civility is a human issue.” Sollman said she remains concerned about escalating disruptions at public meetings and urged people to continue participating peacefully. “We want people to show up, and they need to show up to these meetings, and they need to be part of the conversation and the solution,” she said.
