Couple leaves tornado damaged home in Ringle for Weston

WESTON, Wis. (WSAW) - Ray King built his former home in Ringle 34 years ago. April’s EF-3 tornado tore the life the King’s had there to the ground. “Kids grew up there, and I think what, what we miss a lot is the neighbors that we had,” Ray King said. In July, the couple moved to Weston. It was tens of thousands of dollars cheaper to move than to rebuild a smaller home in Ringle. “The prices just kept going up and up,” said Denise King. ”And when they sent us the final quote, I had noticed as we were going through there, they had forgotten like the rain gutters and things like that, that were in their initial package." Moving was not the first choice for Denise King. “When he suggested moving, I, um, I came out of my camper, and I says, ‘I’m not gonna like this house. I’ll look, because looking’s free.’ And, um, the more I thought about it, I thought, ‘I’m not gonna like it, because it’s big, it’s a two-story.’ But I got here, and I loved every bit of it,” Denise King said. To get out of the camper they had been temporarily living in, and to save money, the Kings left their community behind. Adjusting to Weston “We were used to living in the country and now we’re in the city. And we’re getting adapted to it,” Ray King said. The welcome sign in front of their new home is the first item the Kings put up at their new house. It was bent in the tornado, but they were able to fix it. Few items from their life in Ringle remain. Only a few totes survived the tornado. “I don’t think I’d ever want to go through one again. But, you know, you appreciate what you have once you have nothing,” Ray King said. Denise King said the new house won’t feel like home to her until she can make new memories there. “It changes you once you actually live it, because it makes you appreciate people, more. And every day,” Denise King said. Click here to download the WSAW news app or WSAW First Alert weather app. Click here to submit a news tip or story idea.
