Loganair to offer free fares for children under-12 on Shetland flights By Scott Moncrieff Loganair is offering a children fly free promotion this week on island flights as councillor challenges “equity” of fare costs. Chief executive Luke Farajallah discussed the plans at a meeting of the external transport forum yesterday (Tuesday). For every adult ticket booked, a free seat is available for a child under the age of 12, chief commercial officer Ronnie Matheson confirmed. This is available as part of the Tartan17 sale, which runs until the 15th of September. The announcement came after Loganair unveiled its timetable for up until summer 2027. At the meeting, Shetland South member Alex Armitage said that there was an “inequity” that should be addressed as he highlighted that fares are “unaffordable to many” even with an islander discount. “If, for example, all islanders were offered one free fare completely free each year that might be more equitable,” he proposed. Mr Farajallah responded that Dr Armitage’s point on equity “absolutely strikes at heart of what we’re trying to achieve”. The children’s free fare promotion is an “experiment” to see “what sort of uptake we get on that,” Mr Farajallah said. “I think there is a case for those people who find flying unaffordable, and people who are on reduced income or potentially pensioners and other [members] of a particular group so I completely align with that.” Executives from the airline were also quizzed on the backlogs for compensation claims. “About six weeks ago we were still looking at compensation claims from February and March,” said Mr Farajallah. He said there were around 33 claims outstanding from the island services. “The percentage of people with outstanding claims is tiny, but nevertheless they’re important to those people,” Mr Farajallah continued.
