Council to consider installing crosswalk to honour Canada's veterans in partnership with Chase Legion
Crosswalk for veterans eyed
The Village of Chase could be the next municipality to install a commemorative crosswalk to honour Canada’s veterans.
During its Aug. 12 meeting, Chase council voted in favour of having staff look into the costs of such a proposal.
The meeting agenda included a letter from Susan Murray, president of the Royal Canadian Legion branch in Chase, who asked council to consider partnering with the Legion to install a veteran’s crosswalk to honour the 100th anniversary of the legion.
“Following the example of a number of communities within both the Thompson Nicola and Columbia Shuswap Regional District, the Chase Legion believes that the establishment of a commemorative crosswalk within the Village of Chase would provide a visible symbol to promote year-round remembrance within our community,” said Murray in her letter.
“The Chase Legion has not yet developed a design for the crosswalk, and would prefer to do so with the Village of Chase once a partnership has been agreed to.”
Murray said the Legion thinks the best place for the crosswalk would be at the intersection of Shuswap Avenue and Chase Street, across from the existing crosswalk honouring the victims of residential schools.
“This would further serve to define the corridor through which ceremonial parades, such as those conducted on Remembrance Day have traditionally passed,” Murray said.
Coun. Jane Herman introduced a motion to have staff look into the costs of installing a commemorative crosswalk and bring a report back to council for further discussion.
He asked staff to look into designs that are more broken up, as he said he has heard feedback that designs with heavy coverage can be slippery.
"It's solid paint and you get oils and stuff,” he said.
Joni Heinrich, chief administrative officer, said when staff work on finding out the potential cost of a sidewalk installation they could look into designs similar to the one in Kamloops, which is painted in a way that is similar to a normal crosswalk.
“Maybe more like a crosswalk just with a few pictures on it,” Heinrich said.
Herman's motion passed with a unanimous vote.
