В Укиахе откроется выставка картин, запечатлевших уникальные пейзажи округа Мендосино

Mendocino County is known worldwide for iconic views of our wild ocean, majestic redwoods, and scrappy little towns that have barely changed since the demise of the logging industry. Our huge and varied county is home to the wine industry, old barns associated with waning apple and pear orchards, historic Vichy Springs, the Skunk Train, the Back-to-the-Land movement, and whale watching off our windy ocean bluffs. Everywhere you look, there is another unique-to-us image waiting to be captured on canvas. And that is what the Board members of Art Center Ukiah want to celebrate in September. Susan Blackwelder, who is organizing the show, is clear that she wants images that are instantly recognizable as belonging to Mendocino County. “I don’t want a lot of generic landscapes that could be anywhere,” she says. “I’m hoping that artists will focus on characteristic Mendocino County images that will make viewers smile when they recognize them as part of our home.” Blackwelder continues, “There are so many scenes to choose from, and I’m hoping that we will be treated to a visual celebration of what makes our county unique.” This show is generously sponsored by the Board of the Historical Society of Mendocino County Karen Wallaert is the featured artist in the front windows of the Corner Gallery for the month of September. She is a returning artist, but she has a different perspective on this year’s show and is excited to hang a few new pieces. She explains, “I want to show a variety of different things that have spoken to me over the past year or two. One is a statement piece… It’s realism with a message. It’s a magnolia with garbage on it.” Wallaert says that the other work in her show is mostly done in oil and acrylic. As she did last year, Wallaert has invited one of her private art students to share her space in the gallery’s front windows. This year it will be Annie Bouillerce, who is sixteen years old and a straight-A student at the Redwood Academy in Ukiah. Wallaert describes Bouillerce as “a very astute artist who likes realism with a little twist.” Jessika Casey will remain on the Young Artist Wall in the Corner Gallery for another month. The First Friday opening celebration for all of the above events will be on September 4 from 5- 8 pm. Live music will be provided throughout the evening by Teddy Keez. The Corner Gallery and Art Center Ukiah are located at 201 S State Street in Ukiah.
