Copper Island Academy Director receives 2026 CMU Charter School Leader of the Year CALUMET, Mich. (WLUC) - Copper Island Academy School Director Nora Laho has been honored as the 2026 Central Michigan University Charter School Leader of the Year. Laho leads the K-11 school in Calumet and has received the statewide award and earned a $5,000 prize for the school, according to a Thursday afternoon press release. Laho was honored for her role in expanding the school, championing high expectations and maintaining strong fiscal stewardship. “Nora Laho is a leader who cultivates a place where both students and educators can thrive,” said Corey Northrop, executive director of The Center for Charters at CMU. “Her approach to leading with her heart and setting high expectations is why she stands out among her peers across the state.” The release says Laho has been instrumental in the school’s leadership since it opened in 2021. The award was presented at the CMU Charters Annual Conference in Detroit on Aug. 19 in front of more than 1,000 public charter school teachers, administrators, and board members from across the state.
