Coopers residents oppose rock quarry Published 3:18 pm Tuesday, September 1, 2026 Nearly 100 residents recently packed the Baldwin County Fire Station in Coopers to show their opposition to a rock quarry mining company coming to the area. The meeting brought out several property owners, as well as non-landowners. Many of them made public comments about the possibility of a rock quarry mining company starting operations on Pancras Road in Baldwin County. It also drew District 3 Commissioner Sammy Hall, a resident of the area, as well as two county commission candidates Maurice Liggins and Justin Jones. The meeting happened before the Baldwin County Board of Commissioners enacted a moratorium last week on mining operations in the county for 180 days. The meeting in Coopers has now led to a petition drive, which has drawn the names of hundreds of residents thus far. Claudia Headrick greeted those at the fire station and let everyone know the importance of their voices. “My goal for us is to get organized so we know what we’re looking at,” Headrick said. “Our goal is to just kind of get a consensus as a neighborhood of what we feel as a neighborhood as to our feelings about this,” Headrick said. “I want to make sure we’re listening to each and every concern because your concern may be different from my concern. My concern may be about the health of people because I come from a health background. Your background may be from your point of view, whether it’s from agriculture or just your local family. So, we want to get different points of view.” Headrick said that way, when they attend county commission meetings, they can tell officials exactly what their concerns are and what they think should be done. She said that way, as a group, they can hold commissioners accountable. For example, what steps they will take to protect the area “because at the end of the day, you’re coming into our house talking about doing all this stuff on a gas main line, talking about creating all this traffic, all this turmoil, all this stuff, and you’re in our backyard. Hey, we were here first.” She later called on Pam Peacock, who helped organize a similar meeting at the Meriwether Fire Station for residents opposed to a proposed rock quarry mining company coming to Avery Store Road off Ga. 212.
