For a genuine understanding of the authentic history of pre-colonial Africa, it is important to bear in mind the fact that in ancient times, black Africa extended from the Arabian Peninsula through the Sudan and across initially fertile lands to the west which later evolved into the Sahara Desert as a result of catastrophic climatic change. Geographically and culturally, there was thus a population of black people whose lands formed a continuum that lay in a broad swathe of territory extending all the way from both shores of the Red Sea to lands situated in a vast area in the west of the African continent in what is present-day Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea and Mali … Above all else, it should be borne in mind that the Arabs were relative late comers to what is now known as the Arabian Peninsula, which was originally entirely inhabited by black people who are the genetic ancestors of present-day black Africans. In the regions contiguous to the west bank of the Red Sea, the most powerful kingdom was Kush, located in present day Sudan, which was ruled by black Pharaohs, first from Napata and subsequently from Meroe in an area where elaborate pyramids and other architectural marvels are still to be found. In ancient times, the rule of the black Pharaohs of Kush and Nubia extended into lower and upper Egypt, as attested by the hieroglyphic inscriptions that are to be found on the walls of the amazing pyramids that are located in present-day Egypt and Sudan. The Axumite kingdom of Sheba, which was located in close proximity to Kush, was also under the rule of black kings. The entire region gave rise to civilizations that subsequently gave rise to new kingdoms located in the west of the African continent in the wake of migratory flows, culminating in the establishment of the Wagadou kingdom. *Dr. Ola Balogun is a veteran Nigerian author, film maker and musician who has also devoted many years to the study of black African history and civilization, guided by the work of eminent mentors and teachers including Emeritus Professor E.J.
