Ларри Брилл, создатель легендарного таблоида «The Monster Times», скончался в возрасте 95 лет

By Steve Vertlieb: The wonderful, irrepressible, irascible, seemingly ageless Larry Brill has unimaginably passed from our midst at age ninety-five. A fearless, courageous publisher, Larry along with his intrepid partner Les Waldstein created the groundbreaking bi-weekly “Monster” tabloid The Monster Times. The idea for and concept of the “newspaper of the fantastic” was considered utter madness by many in professional publishing circles in late 1971 and predictions of its imminent failure were rampant throughout the inner corridors of fandom. Despite the warnings of naysayers and predictions by many within the industry that the ambitious magazine would crash and burn while bankrupting its investors and creative team, The Monster Times premiered its first issue in January 1972 with a cover story on the filming and behind the scenes evolution and production of the original King Kong (1933) to overwhelmingly positive reviews and reception throughout America and abroad, creating forty-eight joy packed issues through 1976. Aided and abetted by editors Chuck McNaughton and Joe Kane and featuring definitive articles, research and pioneering commentary by many of today’s leading, most prominent genre film critics and historians, the ‘Times” provided an early training ground for these young aspiring journalists and filmmakers, encouraging limitless opportunities for serious research and study. While his partner Les Waldstein passed away some years ago, Larry enthusiastically continued to carry the torch of joyous, loving affection for classics and classic monster films with dignity, adventure, a sense of fun and a profoundly infectious romance with the arts. A fearless, outspoken champion of human rights, Larry never backed away from controversy, inviting often provocative conversation both on and off the well-worn printed page. On the verge of a new era of both revival and rebirth for his cherished invention, Larry spearheaded and assisted in a reinvention and revival of The Monster Times, with a new book celebrating its legacy scheduled for publication in the Fall of 2026 along with active plans for a new series of magazines and conventions honoring the legendary tabloid. Larry was a visionary publisher, role model and friend whose creativity and influence shall be cherished for decades to come.
