Commemoration event at Newark Air Museum to mark 45th anniversary of Falklands War cancelled amid concerns over new crowd control rule
Organisers of an event to honour the 45th anniversary of the Falklands War have partly blamed new rules on crowd control for its cancellation.
Newark Air Museum planned on hosting a two-day gathering in 2027 to follow on from a festival to mark the 40th anniversary of the conflict in 2022.
However, the museum’s trustees now say that the commemoration will not go ahead.
“In 2025 the decision was taken to stop hosting Cockpit-Fest and other similar two-day events,” a spokesperson for the trustees said. “This decision was in part taken in response to the new obligations for event organisers under the Martyn’s Law Legislation.
“Plus, an additional factor was the impending loss of the overflow car parking area, linked to the site acquisition – this has now happened, with the completion of the land deal on 4th June 2026.”
Officially called the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, Martyn’s Law is named after Martyn Hett, who died in the Manchester Arena bomb attack in May 2017.
The act is due to come into force in April next year and states that venues expecting more than 800 attendees will need to adhere to an ‘enhanced tier’ of security. This includes in-depth public protection measures should an attack happen.
The trustees tested the new car parking arrangements with the Aeroboot event on Saturday (August 8) but said they came away with more questions than answers.
“The available car parking areas, including a new area used on the inner hardstanding, were nearly full by 11am, and the situation was only relieved by some buyers starting to leave.
“However, we did note significant pinch points in the area of the Southfield Site access gates.
“Based on the previous Cockpit-Fest type event, visitor and exhibitor arrival and departure experiences, these single point entries have been highlighted as a potential safety issue, for non-Aeroboot type events.
“As such, the trustees felt unable to meet their Martyn’s Law obligations, using the new site arrangements. This, coupled with the issue of finding a suitable date meant that this morning they took the difficult decision to not proceed with the proposed Falklands event in 2027.
“We appreciate this decision is disappointing, however the safety of people on site and the long-term future of the collection will always remain our priority.”
