Cody Johnson Pauses Knoxville Show to Honor Deployed Soldier Watching on Wife’s Phone Cody Johnson paused mid-performance during a stop in Knoxville, Tennessee, to acknowledge a soldier watching the show on his wife’s phone, tipping his hat toward the screen in a moment… Cody Johnson paused mid-performance during a stop in Knoxville, Tennessee, to acknowledge a soldier watching the show on his wife's phone, tipping his hat toward the screen in a moment of on-stage recognition. The exchange took place Aug. 22 at Thompson-Boling Arena, where Johnson was performing his cover of "Travelin' Soldier" as part of his Live '26 tour. A fan in the front row held up her phone so her deployed husband could watch via FaceTime after his homecoming was delayed and he couldn't attend in person. Johnson spotted the phone, walked to the edge of the stage, and removed his hat in a gesture of thanks. Johnson has leaned into fan requests for cover songs throughout the Live '26 tour, and "Travelin' Soldier" has become a regular fixture of his sets. His 2025 rendition of the song, originally written and recorded by Bruce Robison in 1996 and later popularized by the Dixie Chicks, has topped 100 million streams and earned RIAA gold certification following its Veterans Day release. Johnson first performed the song on acoustic guitar in a 2022 video that has drawn more than 70 million views. A video of the Knoxville moment was posted to TikTok by user Kayleyn98, who filmed her husband watching the performance and later shared that his homecoming had been pushed back. Harrison Yount, Johnson's pedal steel player, responded in the comments, noting it was the first time an audience member had watched one of their shows live from deployment via a phone. "Definitely a cool and memorable moment," Yount added. "We were talking about it after the show." Johnson released his latest album, Banks of the Trinity, in June. His Live '26 tour continues across North America into the fall, including a stop this weekend at Grand Casino Arena in Saint Paul, Minnesota, before he heads to Europe for tour dates in October and November.
