Central Michigan University alumni and friends will honor late longtime baseball coach and athletic director Dave Keilitz with a memorial fund. Keilitz, who died last month at the age of 83, was known for his dedication and commitment to Central Michigan University and a decorated career in athletics. After playing for the Chippewas, he returned to Mount Pleasant to become the head baseball coach in 1971. Keilitz compiled a winning season every year during his tenure, winning four Mid-American Conference championships and finishing with a 456-203 record. The fund will support the commissioning of a statue in his honor, which will be created by sculptor J. Brett Grill. “This statue is so appropriate, even for a humble guy like Dave Keilitz,” University of Cincinnati baseball coach and former CMU head coach Jordan Bischel said in a press release. “Every person that walks around the CMU campus should have a little understanding of the positive influence the coach had on not only CMU baseball but the entire community. It’s obviously well deserved.” Several alumni have already made gifts toward the new Keilitz Memorial Statue Fund, facilitated by the CMU Advancement office. The Executive Board of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) is also supporting the project. Any funds raised beyond what is needed for the statue will go toward the Dave & Sue Keilitz Family Endowment Fund for CMU baseball. “Dave was a special man and a genuine person with high ethics,” Ball State coach and ABCA Executive Board member Rich Maloney said. “He made us all feel special, and that’s a special gift Dave had. A statue is a great way to celebrate his career and life. I can’t think of a better way to honor this man, because his legacy will live on.” After his coaching career, Keilitz became Central Michigan’s athletic director in 1984, serving in the position for 10 years. He then became the ABCA’s Executive Director in 1994, a position he held for 20 years. Keiltz was later inducted into the coaches association’s Hall of Fame in 1989. Anyone who would like to donate or support the project can make a tax-deductible charitable gift through CMU’s fundraising page.
