The city said the St. John Street neighborhood was once a racially diverse community of Black and immigrant families, but in the 1970s, it was demolished for the construction of Interstate 475 and industrial expansion. Thousands of residents were displaced. The city said the park is being developed to preserve and tell the area’s history while creating a welcoming space for new generations. “This project is about more than building a park. It is about honoring the people and families who once called the St. John Street neighborhood home and making sure their history continues to be remembered,” said Mayor Sheldon A. Neeley. “We are seeing that vision take shape, and I am proud that this park will soon provide a place where families can gather, children can play and future generations can learn about the history of this community.” Mayor Sheldon Neeley and Doug Schultz of ROWE Professional Services Company will be at the park on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 11:30 a.m. to go over the progress. Concrete pouring for sidewalks and construction of the park’s pavilion will also take place on Wednesday.
