City and Borough of Juneau launches new public notices, announcements webpage Published 11:12 am Friday, September 4, 2026 The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is modernizing how it provides public notices while continuing to comply with applicable Alaska legal requirements. The Clerk’s Office, in collaboration with the CBJ Webmaster and Law Department, determined that a centralized Public Notices & Announcements webpage could be developed and maintained by using existing CBJ resources. The new webpage was launched on Aug. 3. Deputy city manager Robert Barr said that this approach eliminates the need for a contracted service while providing greater control over content, helping to streamline the publication process and reduce costs. “Unlike a printed newspaper, the webpage can be updated immediately, allowing residents to access current meeting schedules, agendas, public hearing notices, and other information all in one location,” he stated. “The transition also reduces reliance on newspaper publication schedules and provides greater flexibility in publishing information.” CBJ’s weekly meeting schedule, agendas, and many public hearing notices had routinely been published in the Saturday edition of Juneau Empire. Now, CBJ will instead broaden outreach and advertising through local media, including Juneau Empire, Juneau Independent, KTOO, and KINY, to direct residents to the new Public Notices & Announcements webpage and encourage the community to stay informed. Barr said that discontinuing routine newspaper publication of public meeting notices is expected to reduce annual publication costs by approximately $70,000, which includes $57,400 for CBJ public meeting advertising costs, excluding the Juneau School District advertising, and $12,600 in advertising associated with the request for proposal process. An estimated $45,000 in Fiscal Year 2027 outreach and advertising costs went towards promoting the new webpage and encouraging civic engagement. CBJ is anticipating an annual net savings of approximately $25,000.
