Брат комика Криса Фарли рассказал о его глубокой католической вере и тайных делах милосердия

Chris Farley’s Catholic Faith: The Real Matt Foley, Mass, and Unknown Works of Mercy Tom Farley reflects on his brother’s life, saying he was a ‘devout Catholic, fabulous Catholic, so charitable. ... He was so charitable.’ Behind the wild physical comedy and larger-than-life persona that made actor Chris Farley a household name, there was a deeply personal, devout Catholic faith. On a recent episode of Catholics and Cappuccinos, the comedian’s brother Tom Farley and host Siobhan Fallon Hogan reflected on Chris’ upbringing, his spiritual habits, and his quiet acts of charity, weaving a portrait of a comedian whose faith was at the center of his life, despite his heartbreaking death. Traditional Roots & Catholic Schooling Chris grew up in a devout family with values shaped by traditional Catholic ideals. As Fallon Hogan recalled, “We had this model of our parents ... not only were they this 1950s’ version, but they were also very Catholic, you know? And so, like, this 1950s’ Catholic image.” That upbringing involved going to church and serving on the altar, though the Farley brothers couldn’t help but bring their natural mischievousness to Mass. As Tom explained: “We’re all altar boys, but, still, it didn’t change who we were. We just had more filters. But, you put us on the altar ... first of all, the Farley boys, at least three of us there, what do you think was going to happen? And we’re — and there were classmates out in the pews, and we’re making faces at them ...” Higher education was guided by less shenanigans but the same spiritual priorities, with their father preferring Catholic institutions. As Tom noted, “Dad wanted, like, you know, all Jesuit. Barb went to the local Catholic school ...” Chris attended Marquette University, a Jesuit school in Milwaukee, where he made lifelong friends — including a rugby teammate named Matt Foley, who inspired the iconic character. The Real Father Matt Foley It was at Marquette that Chris met the real Matt Foley, who later entered the priesthood. Tom recalled the origin story of Chris’ most famous character, the motivational speaker "who lives in a van down by the river," when the real Father Matt came to see Chris perform at Second City in Chicago: “Matt joins the priesthood, and then, a couple years later, he’s a priest, and he comes to a Second City show. And it was the first time that Chris had the motivational speaker that [Bob] Odenkirk wrote for him, and he knew Matt was in the audience. And he came out, and he goes, ‘I’m Matt Foley!’ And he said to Matt afterwards, he was like, ‘Matt, I’m never changing the name of that character.’” Faith at SNL and Going ‘All In’ When Chris joined Saturday Night Live, the high-pressure, late-night atmosphere didn’t diminish his religious practice. He and fellow Catholic cast member Fallon Hogan would attend Sunday evening Mass together on the Upper East Side after the show’s after-parties. Fallon Hogan remembered Chris’ intense approach to prayer: “We used to go to Mass at Holy Trinity up on 82nd. And we’d go ... there was a night Mass, 5 o’clock, because you’d go to the parties and then you’d go. And Chris would be praying. So everything he did was all in. It was always go big or go home. So when he was praying, he’d be like, ‘Yes!’” Quiet Works of Mercy Beyond attending Mass, Chris quietly lived out acts of charity without seeking publicity. It was only after his death, during his memorial service at St. Malachy’s, known as The Actors’ Chapel in Manhattan, that the full extent of his quiet generosity was brought to light. Tom remembered a man taking the microphone to speak about Chris: “... this guy gets up, and he’s talking about his buddy Chris. He had a Cubs hat on. He’s like, ‘Every time Chris came in the city, he brought me out. He’d find me and bring me out to dinner.’ ... He would do these things.” Fallon Hogan remembered another speaker at the memorial service — an older man who was confined to his house: “And there was another guy that was a shut-in ... an older man that spoke at St. Malachy’s ... and he’d say he would bring him soup, and he didn’t tell anybody he did that.” Tom reflected on his brother’s life by saying he was a “devout Catholic, fabulous Catholic, so charitable. ... He was so charitable.” The Tragedy of Addiction and Shared Struggles Yet, alongside that deep spiritual center existed a relentless, tragic battle with addiction. Despite his faith, his commitment to charity, and repeated stints in rehabilitation, the same all-in intensity that drove Chris’ performances and prayers also fueled his struggles with drugs and alcohol. In December 1997, at just 33 years old, Chris died of an accidental drug overdose — a devastating loss that shocked his fans and left a profound void for his family and friends who had tried so hard to help him. That struggle with substance abuse was not unique to Chris within the family dynamic. Tom Farley faced his own battles with alcoholism and addiction, navigating the complex intersection of familial patterns, grief and recovery. In processing his own 12-step recovery journey, Tom often reflected back on the Catholic framework of their youth with a touch of lighthearted self-awareness, noting, “I’m like, ‘Oh, a lifelong Catholic! I only have to remember 11 steps. I already got one of them.’” Ultimately, Chris’ life stands as a painful reminder of the stark reality of addiction — that even deep faith, immense talent and widespread affection cannot simply erase such an affliction. Yet through Tom’s ongoing advocacy in prevention and recovery, alongside the quiet legacy of kindness Chris left behind, the core of who Chris was — beyond the tragedy of his death — continues to be remembered.
