В Чианг Рай арестован китайский пенсионер за десятилетнюю нелегальную торговлю одеждой

CHIANG RAI – Thai authorities have arrested a 59-year-old Chinese national for running an illegal clothing business across the country. Police caught the man, identified only as Mr. Wu, during a routine vehicle check in Mae Lao, Chiang Rai. He had been living in the country on a valid retirement visa but completely lacked a legal work permit. The multi-agency task force stopped his enclosed pickup truck at the Pa Tueng checkpoint in Chiang Rai’s Mae Lao district. When officers opened the back of the vehicle, they found it packed to the brim with ready-made garments. His passport showed his retirement visa was fully legal and valid until the year 2027. However, Thailand strictly forbids foreigners on retirement visas from working or earning any local income. Key Takeaways - Police arrested a 59-year-old Chinese man in Chiang Rai for running an illegal clothing business out of his truck. - The suspect used a valid retirement visa to live in Thailand for a decade without obtaining a mandatory work permit. - He earned up to 90,000 baht a month selling clothes sourced from Bangkok and Mae Sai before facing deportation. During questioning, Mr. Wu shared the exact details of his long-running nationwide hustle. He told investigators that he bought his clothing inventory from wholesale hubs like the famous Bobae Market in Bangkok. He also sourced cheap garments from the bustling border markets in Mae Sai. Once his truck was loaded, he hit the road to sell the items across various provinces. He acted as both a retail and wholesale vendor at local flea markets all over the country. Amazingly, he managed to keep this highly mobile business running under the radar for more than ten years. The illegal operation proved to be very profitable for a solo vendor. He told police he brought in an average of 30,000 to 90,000 baht every single month. Legal Trouble and Next Steps Thai immigration laws are extremely clear regarding the rules for foreign retirees living in the kingdom. You can stay long-term to spend your pension, but you cannot take jobs away from local citizens. Officials officially charged him with working as an alien without a valid work permit. They also charged him with engaging in work outside the specific rights granted to foreigners. The penalties for these offenses are quite strict under the current legal framework. Mr. Wu now faces a fine ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 baht for his business activities. In recent months, the government has noticeably stepped up inspections at border checkpoints and popular tourist areas. Police want to ensure that long-term visitors are actively respecting the strict limits of their visa types. Retirement visas are designed purely for older expats to contribute to the local economy through their savings. They are never meant to be a convenient cover for operating a private, untaxed retail business. The recent arrest in Chiang Rai serves as a highly visible warning to other expats bending the rules. Immigration task forces are sharing much more data across different regional provinces to spot unusual domestic travel patterns. As Mr. Wu prepares for his forced return home, his profitable ten-year road trip has finally come to a permanent end.
