В Австралии в 2026 году популярны автономные солнечные системы для караванов с литиевыми батареями

Free camping has never been more popular in Australia, and increasingly, the caravans and motorhomes parked at remote sites aren’t running noisy generators to keep the fridge cold. A properly designed caravan solar setup can now comfortably run a compressor fridge, lighting, charging, and even a CPAP machine for days at a time without mains power. But a caravan solar setup in Australia in 2026 is more than just a panel on the roof. It’s a system of several parts that all need to be sized and matched correctly, and getting one part wrong can undermine the whole setup. This guide walks through every component of a complete system, from panels and regulators through to batteries, inverters, and charging from your tow vehicle, so you can plan a setup that actually matches how you travel. Quick Summary - A complete caravan solar system has five main parts working together: panels, a solar regulator, a battery bank, an inverter, and often a DC-DC charger. - Sizing should start with your actual daily power usage, not the biggest panel or battery that fits the budget. - Fixed rooftop panels and portable panels each solve different problems, and many serious travellers run both rather than choosing one. The five parts of a complete caravan solar system Before comparing individual products, it helps to understand how a caravan solar system fits together as a whole. Each part has a specific job, and the system is only as good as its weakest link. - Solar panels generate power from sunlight, either fixed to the roof, mounted flexibly, or set up as a portable folding panel or mat. - A solar regulator (charge controller) manages how that power flows into your battery, protecting it from overcharging and adjusting the charge rate as conditions change. - A battery bank stores the energy so you can use it after the sun goes down, or on cloudy days when panels aren’t producing much. - An inverter converts the battery’s 12V (or 24V) DC power into 240V AC, for anything that needs to plug into a normal power point. - A DC-DC charger tops up your battery from your tow vehicle’s alternator while driving, working alongside solar rather than replacing it. Not every setup needs all five. A simple weekend rig might skip the inverter entirely if everything runs on 12V. But understanding what each part does makes it much easier to spot where a poorly performing system is actually falling short. When comparing pre-packaged caravan solar kits, check exactly which of these five components are included. Some kits include only panels and a regulator, leaving the battery, inverter, and DC-DC charger as separate purchases. Fixed roof panels, portable panels, and flexible panels There are three common ways to mount solar panels on a caravan or RV, and each suits a different style of travel. Fixed rigid panels, bolted permanently to the roof, are the most efficient option per watt and require no daily setup or pack-down. Their downside is that they can’t be angled toward the sun or moved out of shade, so their output depends entirely on where the van is parked and which way it’s facing. Portable folding panels or mats can be set up on the ground, angled toward the sun, and moved throughout the day to chase both sunlight and shade for the van itself. They’re especially popular with free campers who want to park in the shade of a tree while still getting full sun on the panel a few metres away. The trade-off is the extra setup and pack-down each time you stop. Flexible panels, bonded to a thin, slightly curved backing, suit curved roof sections or weight-sensitive builds where a rigid panel won’t sit flush, though they typically run warmer than rigid panels in direct sun, which can reduce their output slightly over a full day. Many experienced caravanners run a combination: a fixed rooftop system to cover baseline daily needs without any effort, plus a portable panel that comes out for extended free camps or heavily shaded sites where the fixed panels alone aren’t enough. Expert tip: If you regularly free camp under trees for shade, don’t rely on fixed roof panels alone. A portable panel you can move into full sun will often outperform a much larger fixed array sitting in dappled shade. Sizing your system: start with your daily power usage The most common mistake in caravan solar is buying panels and batteries based on budget or what looks impressive in a shop, rather than working out actual daily power usage first. A system built for someone running LED lighting and charging a phone is very different to one that also needs to run a 12V compressor fridge, a CPAP machine overnight, a laptop, and an induction cooktop. To size a system properly, list every appliance you’ll run, its typical daily running hours, and its power draw in watts, then convert that into daily watt-hours (or amp-hours at your system voltage). A compressor fridge, for example, might draw relatively little on paper but runs on and off around the clock, so its real daily consumption adds up more than a quick glance suggests. Once you know your daily usage, you can work backward to a sensible panel size (accounting for realistic sun hours, not perfect lab conditions) and a battery bank large enough to cover at least a day or two of cloudy weather without running flat. Expert tip: Add roughly 20 to 30 per cent buffer to your calculated daily usage figure. Real-world conditions, including cloud cover, panel angle, and dust on the panels, mean actual output is almost always lower than the manufacturer’s rated figure. MPPT vs PWM regulators, and why it matters The solar regulator (or charge controller) is one of the most overlooked parts of a caravan solar system, yet the type you choose has a real impact on how much of your panels’ output actually reaches your battery. PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) regulators are the simpler, cheaper option. They work well when your panel and battery voltages are closely matched, but they can’t make efficient use of panels rated at a significantly higher voltage than your battery bank. MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) regulators are more sophisticated and more expensive, but they actively adjust to draw the maximum possible power from your panels regardless of the voltage difference between panel and battery. In practical terms, this often means noticeably more charge reaching your battery from the same panels, particularly in cooler weather or overcast conditions where panel voltage behaves differently. For most caravan and RV setups in 2026, especially anything beyond a very basic single-panel system, an MPPT regulator is worth the extra cost. Expert tip: Make sure your regulator’s maximum input voltage and current ratings comfortably exceed your panel array’s specifications, including some headroom for cold-weather voltage spikes, which are higher than a panel’s standard rated output. Lithium vs AGM batteries for caravan and RV use Your battery bank is where most of your setup’s cost, weight, and long-term value sits, and the choice between lithium and AGM affects all three. AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries are the more established, cheaper option upfront. They’re heavier for the same usable capacity and typically shouldn’t be discharged below around 50 per cent without shortening their lifespan, which effectively halves their usable capacity compared to their rated size. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries cost more initially but are significantly lighter, can typically be discharged to 80 to 100 per cent of their rated capacity without the same lifespan penalty, and generally last several times longer in charge cycles. For a given usable capacity, this often makes lithium more cost-effective over the life of the battery, even with the higher purchase price, and the weight saving matters more than it might seem on a caravan already close to its towing limit. For weekend campers with modest power needs, AGM can still make sense on cost alone. For anyone travelling for extended periods, running a compressor fridge continuously, or watching their van’s overall weight closely, lithium has become the more common choice for new installations in 2026. Expert tip: Whichever chemistry you choose, check that your regulator and any existing battery management system are actually compatible with it. Lithium batteries in particular often need charge profiles specifically set for LiFePO4 rather than generic settings designed for lead-acid batteries. DC-DC chargers: topping up from your tow vehicle Solar isn’t the only way to charge a caravan battery, and in 2026 it’s increasingly not even the primary way for travellers who do a lot of driving between stops. A DC-DC charger takes power from your tow vehicle’s alternator while driving and feeds it into your caravan battery at the correct voltage and charge profile. This matters more than it used to because modern vehicles, particularly those with “smart” alternators designed to improve fuel economy, often don’t output a simple, consistent voltage suitable for directly charging a caravan battery the way older vehicles did. A DC-DC charger manages that conversion properly, and for lithium batteries in particular, using the correct charge profile rather than relying on the vehicle’s alternator output directly. In practice, a DC-DC charger and solar work well together rather than one replacing the other: solar handles charging while stationary, and the DC-DC charger tops the battery back up on driving days, particularly useful on trips where you’re moving between sites daily and don’t always get a full day of sun. Expert tip: If your tow vehicle has a smart alternator (common in most vehicles built from the mid-2010s onward), don’t assume a basic charge lead from the vehicle to the caravan will properly charge your battery. Check with an auto-electrician whether a DC-DC charger is needed for your specific vehicle and battery combination. Choosing an inverter: do you need 240V power at all Not every caravan setup needs an inverter. If everything you run is genuinely 12V- lighting, a 12V fridge, USB charging- you can skip this component entirely and simplify your system. But most travellers eventually want to run something that needs a standard 240V power point: a laptop charger, a small kettle, a CPAP machine, or power tools. Pure sine wave inverters produce power that closely mimics the clean, smooth waveform of mains grid electricity. This is the safer choice for sensitive electronics, and in some cases the only option that will work properly with equipment like CPAP machines or certain laptop chargers. Modified sine wave inverters are cheaper but produce a rougher waveform. They can run simple resistive appliances fine, but may cause issues, or in some cases damage, with more sensitive electronics. Size your inverter to comfortably exceed the peak wattage of whatever you’ll run through it, keeping in mind that many appliances, particularly anything with a motor, draw significantly more power in the moment they switch on than their continuous running wattage suggests. Expert tip: If you’re only running the inverter occasionally for specific appliances, look for a model with a low standby power draw, or fit it with its own isolator switch. A poor-quality inverter left switched on can quietly drain a battery overnight even with nothing plugged into it. Seasonal and regional differences across Australia Solar output for the same panel setup varies significantly depending on where and when you’re travelling. As a rough guide, most of Australia sees somewhere around four to five peak sun hours a day on average, but this drops meaningfully in winter, and further again in the southern states like Victoria and Tasmania compared to the northern half of the country. This matters most for anyone planning an extended trip through varying climates and seasons, rather than staying in one region. A system sized comfortably for a winter trip through northern Queensland may fall well short of the same traveller’s needs on a winter lap through Tasmania. If your travel plans span multiple regions and seasons, it’s worth sizing your system for the more conservative end of your expected conditions, rather than the best-case scenario. FAQs How many watts of solar do I need for a caravan in Australia? It depends on your daily power usage, but as a general guide, 200W suits light weekend use, while 400W or more is common for extended travel with a compressor fridge and multiple devices. Calculate your actual daily watt-hour usage for an accurate figure. What size battery do I need for caravan solar in Australia? Size your battery to cover at least one to two days of usage without sun, based on your calculated daily consumption. Many touring setups run 100Ah to 200Ah of lithium capacity, though needs vary widely depending on appliances and trip length. Do I need an MPPT regulator for a caravan solar system? Not always, but it’s recommended for most setups beyond a very basic single small panel. MPPT regulators draw more usable power from your panels than PWM regulators, particularly when panel and battery voltages differ. Can I run an air conditioner off caravan solar? It’s possible but demanding, requiring a large battery bank, a substantial inverter, and significant panel capacity, since air conditioners draw far more power than typical caravan appliances. Most solar-only setups aren’t sized for continuous air conditioner use. Is lithium worth the extra cost over AGM for caravan batteries? For most extended or full-time travellers, yes, due to greater usable capacity, lower weight, and a longer lifespan. For occasional weekend use with modest power needs, AGM can still be a reasonable, lower-cost choice. Key Takeaways - A complete caravan solar setup involves five components working together: panels, a regulator, a battery bank, an inverter, and often a DC-DC charger, not just a panel on the roof. - Work out your actual daily power usage before choosing panel and battery sizes, rather than buying based on budget or what looks impressive in a shop. - MPPT regulators generally outperform PWM regulators for anything beyond a very basic setup, particularly when panel and battery voltages don’t closely match. - Lithium batteries cost more upfront but offer greater usable capacity, lighter weight, and a longer lifespan than AGM, making them the more common choice for serious travellers in 2026. - A DC-DC charger complements solar rather than replacing it, particularly for lithium batteries and modern vehicles with smart alternators.
