Strong growth in beverage cans helped Orora maintain steady underlying earnings in FY26, as weak wine and spirits demand, declining beer bottle volumes and consumer trading-down weighed on its glass operations.
Orora’s cans volumes increased 6.3 per cent over the year, lifting revenue by 13.3 per cent to $880m. Growth was strongest across energy drinks, carbonated soft drinks and alternative soft drinks, while beer also recorded solid growth.
Orora Managing Director and CEO Brian Lowe said the result highlighted the increasingly different market conditions facing the company’s cans and glass businesses.
“FY26 again highlights the strength of Orora’s cans business, and the continued divergence in market conditions we are navigating. A strong cans performance enabled the Group to deliver stable underlying earnings with EBITDA in line with the prior year,” Lowe said.
“Favourable market dynamics in cans, including the continued consumer preference shift to aluminium and growth in new beverage categories, has supported 6.3 per cent volume growth, and 14.7 per cent growth in underlying EBITDA.”
The growth was supported by recent capacity investments, including a second production line at Revesby that has added 10 per cent to Orora’s network capacity and supported increased Queensland demand for multi-size cans.
Orora’s new 375ml can line at Rocklea is expected to be commissioned by the end of the first quarter of FY27. The approximately $140m project will add about 13 per cent to network capacity over time.
The company expects cans volumes to grow at its longer-term rate of around four to six per cent in FY27, with cans EBIT forecast to be higher than FY26.
Conditions were more difficult across Orora’s glass operations, with cost-of-living pressures affecting premiumisation and encouraging a shift towards lower-priced wine and spirits products.
Saverglass volumes increased 5.9 per cent, driven by Tequila, Mezcal, Bourbon, vodka and Crémant, but changes in category and product mix reduced average selling prices and margins. Saverglass EBIT fell 20.6 per cent in euro terms and 18.2 per cent on a reported Australian-dollar basis to $108.7m.
“For our glass business, spirits and wine industry volumes remain challenged across most geographies, with cost-of-living pressures impacting premiumisation trends,” Lowe said.
“Volumes for Saverglass were up 5.9 per cent in FY26, however revenue and earnings reflect the negative impacts of within-category mix, lowering average selling price and margins.”
At Orora’s Gawler glass operation in South Australia, volumes declined 2.1 per cent as beer bottle volumes continued to fall and wine volumes remained broadly flat. Revenue slipped 0.3 per cent to $284.5m, although EBIT increased 10.5 per cent to $28.1m following operational efficiencies from the site’s transition from three furnaces to two.
Orora said challenging domestic and export wine demand and the shift from glass bottles to cans for beer were expected to continue in FY27.
The company recorded a $742.8m non-cash impairment against its glass business after revising the expected timing of a recovery in consumer demand and Saverglass earnings. Along with other significant items, the impairment contributed to a statutory net loss of $616.6m.
Group revenue increased 6.5 per cent to $2.23bn, while EBITDA was broadly steady at $420.3m. Underlying net profit after tax declined 5.9 per cent to $142.2m and group EBIT fell 5.3 per cent to $248.2m.
