Camp Shelby designated ‘permissive test range’ for military tech

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Tuesday, state and Camp Shelby leaders gathered at the base to reveal exciting news. Camp Shelby was designated a permissive test range. Camp Shelby has served as a training ground for American soldiers for more than a century. The base is now also positioned to help develop battlefield tools. Maj. Gen. Bobby Ginn, the adjutant general for the Mississippi National Guard, pointed to the base’s history. “No doubt, Camp Shelby was chosen for this role because of what it’s done in its history since 1917,” Ginn said. Gov. Tate Reeves said the designation benefits private companies working with the base. “It allows for private sector entities to partner with Camp Shelby to come in and use the test range so that we can get their products to market faster,” Reeves said. Sen. Roger Wicker said the base’s land and the state’s leadership made it a natural choice for the designation. “It was a good fit because of the leadership that we have,” Wicker said. “And also it’s a unique spot of real estate. I mean, over 100,000 acres of land dedicated to national defense, but I think more importantly, our leadership and our hospitality, our willingness to work over and over again with industries to make America strong and keep us safe.” The goal is speed. As technology changes, the Army wants new systems tested in realistic conditions before they are needed on the battlefield. Ginn said the pace of change on the battlefield is driving the need for faster testing. “The lessons learned in eastern Ukraine, we can’t get there fast enough,” Ginn said. “We’ve got to speed. Speed is the most important ingredient. When you talk about speed, getting somewhere to testing, Camp Shelby is the place to do it because we already have the basic layout already.” Reeves said the designation could have an impact beyond the military mission itself. “That obviously opens up a great opportunity for Camp Shelby, but also opens up a great opportunity for the Pine Belt in terms of the potential for new and existing industries to move here, create jobs here, and grow the economy here,” Reeves said. Leaders say private industry is already part of the conversation, with a symposium planned to bring companies to Camp Shelby to explore future partnerships. “The size of Camp Shelby, the resources Camp Shelby has, the capability Camp Shelby has, that’s why it was chosen as one of the four and one of the two UAS, counter-UAS test and evaluation sites.” Want more WDAM 7 news in your inbox?
