'Cambridge's best cafe' has been open for 100+ years and serves amazing Chelsea buns
Looking for tasty sweet treats in Cambridge? People are raving about the Chelsea buns at one establishment which you need to try – and there are many flavours to choose from
Whether you're visiting or a local looking for tasty treats, it can be hard finding the perfect place. You might want a spot to buy a sweet treat and coffee, as well as read a couple of chapters of your book and watch the world go by.
That's why people are recommending a cafe named the "best" in Cambridge, which has been open for over 100 years and sells the most delightful-looking (and tasting) Chelsea buns you've ever seen. Established in 1920, Fitzbillies sells six different Chelsea bun flavours – and they all sound immense.
Soffy, who posts on TikTok as @alittlecupofus, said it was the best cafe in Cambridge, urging people to visit if they were in the area.
What is a Chelsea bun?
For those not in the know, a Chelsea bun is a traditional British sweet pastry made from a rich yeast dough, rolled into a square shape, and filled with butter, brown sugar, currants or raisins, and mixed spices.
It's different from a cinnamon roll as they're packed together in a tray, so they bake into a distinctive square-sided, connected shape.
After baking, they are brushed with a hot sugar syrup or water glaze to create a sticky, shiny finish.
According to Tasting History, the bun was first created in the 18th century at the 18th-century Chelsea Bun House in west London. The famous shop was a favourite of the Hanoverian royalty and drew massive crowds before it closed and was demolished in 1839.
Today, they remain a classic treat across the UK, usually enjoyed warm with a cup of tea
What makes Fitzbillies so unique?
They sell famous Chelsea buns in many different flavours, so it doesn't matter what you're in the mood for, as they'll certainly have something to suit.
In a pinned video on their Instagram page, they wrote: "You may have tried our famous Fitzbillies Chelsea buns...
"But we also make cinnamon, blueberry, Nutella, cheese & Marmite, and pesto…"This is your sign to try a new bun flavour next time you visit our Cambridge Fitzbillies branches!"
What do travellers say?
On Tripadvisor, someone wrote the "food was great", while the "service was very good" when they visited. They also commented on the "very relaxed atmosphere" which is a must for many.
Another penned: "We asked for their famous Chelsea buns. They said it was vegan. They are square, sweet and have sticky syrup slathering it. Filled with plenty of small currants, it was a tasty delight."
