Cadent slashes claims costs by 28% through proactive TTC safety partnership Cadent has reduced its annual average fleet insurance claims costs by 28% in the first year of its proactive driver safety partnership with training and compliance expert TTC Group. The collaboration has successfully modernised risk management across the gas distribution network’s 4,150-strong mixed fleet by shifting from reactive processes to a data-led, safety-first culture. The joint initiative initially focused on improving visibility and compliance surrounding licence checks for operational, business and grey fleet drivers across Cadent’s mixed fleet. The company transitioned from basic licence checks to TTC’s complete end-to-end driver risk management solution, Continuum. The automated system delivers more consistent licence validation and flags high-risk drivers promptly, signposting them to appropriate driver training before incidents occur. Since partnering with TTC, Cadent has also introduced Permit to Drive, placing clear responsibility for maintaining eligibility to drive with its drivers. Cadent has defined mandatory requirements for drivers, including up-to-date documents and training. The TTC Continuum platform then works with drivers to gather, verify and maintain compliance records, issuing a Permit to Drive once requirements are met. Since implementation, Cadent consistently achieves a 98% permit to drive rate. As the partnership enters its second year, the focus towards a more proactive competence-led driver safety model is expected to help improve Cadent’s fleet safety even further. Louise Crosskill, fleet and logistics operations project manager at Cadent, said the partnership with TTC had been a pivotal step in strengthening Cadent’s commitment to a safety-first culture across the entire fleet. “The introduction of the Continuum platform has given us real confidence in our compliance, with automated licence and grey fleet checks providing both visibility and assurance, while significantly reducing administrative burden.” A key requirement of the partnership with TTC was that processes needed to be simple and intuitive, given the diverse IT skills across the workforce. The licence checks and Permit to Drive solutions have ticked that box, helping to signpost training when and where it is required. Crosskill continued: “What has been particularly powerful is how we’ve been able to place greater ownership in the hands of our drivers, empowering individuals to take responsibility for their own safety and compliance. By giving our fleet team a clear, real-time view of risk across the business we can intervene earlier, support our drivers more effectively and tailor training where it’s needed most.” As the partnership moves forward, Cadent continues to use quarterly e-learning to help keep road safety visible and relevant throughout the organisation. Meanwhile, compliance data is shared at senior levels to help create accountability and healthy competition between areas, reinforcing the ‘safety culture’ buy-in across all levels. Future plans include improving how driver competence is assessed, using training more proactively to target support before accidents happen and expanding high-risk training beyond probationary drivers and drivers with elevated levels of penalty points.
