Bye-bye, Mr. Boomer: Longtime 19 News reporter Harry Boomer retires
Mr. Harry Boomer calls it a career after 55 years in radio and television
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Harry Boomer, respectfully known as Mr. Boomer, is retiring after 37 years at 19 News and 55 years in radio and television.
“The day has come that I must say goodbye to all my friends and company. I’m sorry, I can’t resist,” smirked 19 News reporter Harry Boomer. “It just seems like the stars were aligned. I’m old as dirt, but I’m blessed to be above ground.”
Career at 19 News
Harry is the longest tenured on-air talent here at 19 News. He’s been an education reporter, morning anchor and host of 43 Focus, the station’s weekly public affairs program.
“I love gathering and disseminating news and information. Giving people perspective on what’s affecting their lives on a daily basis,” explained Boomer.
Among his countless honors, Mr. Boomer was named Broadcast Journalist of the Year by the Greater Cleveland Association of Black Journalists. He also served as the organization’s president.
He is a NATAS Gold and Silver Circle award recipient and a Broadcasters Hall of Fame inductee.
Connection to the community
But Harry is not just a seasoned journalist, he is a fixture in the community, a friend, someone who has felt like family, sharing thousands of your stories, and not afraid to tell it like it is.
He says having respect in the community means a lot.
“It means that people have tapped into the essence of who I am. I tell people I was born human, and I will never lose my humanity when it comes to reporting. But I like to add a little bit of perspective from what you’ve come to know as Boomerisms, and wisdom from my daddy and my mom,” expressed Boomer.
He says the best part of his job has been coming to work and seeing people who have become not only his TV family but close friends.
Harry admits he won’t miss reporting year after year out in the cold.
“But hey, I’ve been able to weather the storm,” said Boomer.
Mr. Boomer says there have been so many special moments with 19 News viewers and others in the community over the decades.
These remind him how truly blessed he’s been.
“I’ve had people [ask,] ‘Mr. Boomer, can I just give you a hug? I need a hug.’ I said, ‘Come here... No big deal.’ Because that is what they need and, quite honestly, sometimes that’s what I need.
“A guy the other day stopped me, [saying,] ‘I asked you for five dollars and you gave me five dollars. But you stood there and you talked to me for twenty minutes, and I was homeless then. I got a job now. I got a family, and I would not have made it had it not been for that twenty minutes of inspiration.’ That means a lot to me,” described Boomer.
Harry’s final day
His last day at 19 News will be the day before his 73rd birthday.
Harry says if you flip that number around, it is 37, the number of years he’s been at the news station.
“I have needed my team for 37 years, and it has been my honor and privilege to work with all the others I have worked with, and I hope that I leave under the sunshine of having made the station proud and the city proud,” expressed Boomer.
