Buffalo High School students turn summer break into day of service for flood victims PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — For some Buffalo High School students, summer break wasn’t just about time off. They gave up a day of their summer vacation to help families in Weston recover from devastating flooding. About 35 students, along with several teachers, traveled to Weston to volunteer at a flood relief distribution center. Instead of spending the day at home, the students spent several hours sorting donations, organizing supplies and helping families who had lost so much. For student Sarah Affolter, seeing the impact of the flooding firsthand was difficult. “Their whole life was on their front lawn. That was honestly heartbreaking," Affolter said. The students helped with whatever was needed. Bryar Nunley spent time helping families gather necessities, from socks to paper products, and then helped carry those items to their cars. “I got to walk around with the people that needed the help, and I got to put it in their car and then walk them to their car," Nunley said. Nunley said seeing the devastation in person put things into perspective. “Just because it was bad conditions doesn’t mean that they don’t deserve to get help," Nunley said. The trip was organized with help from Lone Oak Church, but Buffalo High School science teacher Heather Casto said the experience was about more than just volunteering. She said the trip was an opportunity to teach students what it means to be part of a community. “When we heard that people near us were hurting, it was just a natural thing to try to get some students together and go up and help them," Casto said. She said she was proud of the students for giving up a day of their summer to help people they had never met. “They did give up a day from their summer vacation, and they went up not knowing what we were going to get into," Casto said. For the students, the experience was a reminder that making a difference doesn’t always require a lot of money or resources. Sometimes, it simply requires being willing to show up. Nunley said that’s something she plans to carry with her. “If I can do something to help them, I might as well try," Nunley said.
