Волонтеры Брукхейвена маркируют ливневые стоки для защиты водоемов от загрязнения

Brookhaven volunteers team up to protect local waterways from pollution ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Volunteers in Brookhaven are reminding their neighbors to protect local waterways from pollution. Equipped with signs and glue provided by the city, members of the Pine Hills Civic Association spent Saturday morning marking local storm drain inlets. The goal is to let the community know that whatever goes down these drains flows directly to local waterways. “A lot of people like to step forward, raise their hand and say, ‘I’ll help,’ but if we don’t have a way to plug them into doing something, they become disenfranchised. We love opportunities to partner with our city and partner with the community,” said David Leusk, a member of the Pine Hills Civic Association board. The hands-on effort is part of a larger push to protect the local environment. Brookhaven Mayor Pro Tem John Funny said these markers serve as a crucial reminder that stormwater entering the drainage system can carry pollution directly into local waterways. “We don’t want residents to dump trash, litter, grass debris or tree leaves in the drop inlet, because that makes it to our waterways that provides quality water for us to drink,” Funny said. To help the neighborhood complete this project, the City of Brookhaven provided the Pine Hills Civic Association with all the necessary placards and supplies. He said it just adds an important reminder to all neighbors. “I know we love to cut our yards and keep our grass nice and neat, and then some people like to take the grass and dump it into the drop inlet, but that’s really the drainage for our water system, so we expect our stormwater to drain there,” Funny explained. “There is a process of cleaning the water and going to the Chattahoochee and making it prepared for us to drink, but when you add pollutants to the water, it really damages the quality of the water.” Leusk said the signs are a great way to get the community both active and aware of their environmental impact. “Respect them. A lot of people get a little lazy sometimes or thoughtless and will drop stuff down in the street, and it ends up in our waterways, which impacts the ecosystem,” Leusk said. Copyright 2026 WANF.
