There are seven companies leading the global charge around unifying workload automation, workflow orchestration and data pipelines across on-premises and cloud-native architectures in the AI era. IT research firm Gartner has named Broadcom, BMC, Beta Systems Software, HCLSoftware, IBM, Stonebranch and Redwood Software as owning the world’s leading automation and orchestration platforms in its new 2026 Magic Quadrant For Service Orchestration And Automation Platforms report. By 2029, Gartner says 75 percent of service orchestration and automation platform workflows will leverage generative AI to increase troubleshooting efficiency by 50 percent—up from less than 20 percent in 2026. Additionally, by 2030, 50 percent of service orchestration and automation platform activity will be initiated by AI agents—up from less than 5 percent in 2026. By moving beyond managing individual tasks and coordinating entire workflows, these platforms help customers run complex processes more smoothly and speed up delivery, said Bob Keblusek, chief technology officer of solution provider Sentinel. “[The] platforms help customers move beyond sort of managing disconnected tasks and instead automate entire workflows. It’s a huge time saver for sure,” said Keblusek. “So by combining automation [with] their workloads, and provisioning their resources, and having this software orchestration across a customer’s environment, it just makes it so much easier to run and scale operations,” he said. One popular use case is workload and workflow automation, but there’s also hybrid cloud infrastructure provisioning and data pipeline orchestration. These world-leading platforms are also great for integrating with DevOps tools and data pipelines, while developers can also help “lower customers’ cost with optimization,” he said. Strengths: BMC has positioned Control-M as a production-grade control plane for agentic AI architectures. Another strength is BMC’s platform embeds data quality validation natively within the execution layer, eliminating reliance on custom scripts or third-party testing tools. Weaknesses: Control-M’s licensing and pricing models based on tracking task executions can lead to cost overruns and budgeting complexities for procurement teams. Additionally, Control-M does not offer native OpenTelemetry data streams for observability of executions. Leader: Redwood Software Redwood Software ranks first in vision on the quadrant and second in execution. The company’s RunMyJobs platform provides workload automation, workflow orchestration and data pipeline orchestration across distributed, hybrid and cloud environments. Deployment: RunMyJobs is delivered as a single-tenant SaaS offering and as self-hosted deployments. Strengths: Redwood maintains a co-development integration with SAP, serving as the only workload automation vendor recognized as an SAP Endorsed App and natively embedded within the RISE with SAP reference architecture. Another strength is that Redwood provides fully isolated cloud infrastructure and databases for each customer. Weaknesses: Redwood’s direct sales strategy and specialized vendor relationships can introduce friction for enterprises that rely on independent system integrators. Additionally, Gartner said customers frequently cite frustration with sales execution during contract renewals, noting unexpected price escalations and aggressive pushes for expanded licensing or premium add-ons. Leader: IBM IBM ranks third in vision and fourth in execution on the quadrant. The company’s IBM Workload Automation (IWA) platform provides workload automation and workflow orchestration capabilities spanning hybrid cloud, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, data ecosystems, AI workloads and mainframe environments. Deployment: IWA can be deployed on-premises as a single-tenant or multitenant SaaS and via containerized Kubernetes deployments. Strengths: IBM has integrated AI into the execution layer of IWA, including watsonx Orchestrate to enable governed agentic AI as well as native MCP client capabilities for third-party AI models and data sources. Another strength is that IWA’s SaaS deployments have achieved FedRAMP High compliance for U.S. federal agencies. Weaknesses: Clients operating in dynamic cloud environments report unpredictability due to IBM’s licensing metrics, including Virtual Processor Unit and capacity calculations. Additionally, IWA is co-developed with HCLSoftware, which licenses and brands the product independently. Leader: Stonebranch Stonebranch ranks third in execution on the quadrant and fourth in vision. The company’s Universal Automation Center (UAC) platform offers workload automation, workflow orchestration, data pipeline orchestration and managed file transfer capabilities across distributed, hybrid, cloud and mainframe environments. Deployment: UAC can be deployed on-premises, as IaaS, in containerized Kubernetes architectures, or as SaaS. Strengths: Stonebranch offers a “Universal Portal,” a streamlined interface that enables nontechnical users to build, monitor and trigger their own complex automations via self-service without writing scripts. Another strength is that the platform’s AI Extension Builder uses AI to reduce the time to develop and release custom integrations.
